This is where 4GB of RAM come in VERY handy

Besides one plotmaker, one artlantis R and two explorers, I have currently 4 ArchiCADs open.

If you have two screens, you can even try this:
On one screen you put one version of your current project (version a).
On the other you open another AC with version b of your project.
at the beginning, they are the same. But, as you move along, you make some changes on each version, like, what if the windows where bigger, or what if the stairs where to move here.
As time passes, you see version a and b get ever more different.

Now here comes the interesting part:
You start to get feedback from one version to the other, and make your solutions much more rich.

Of course, having a second brain would be a big help

<T>Does anyone know how to move a chunk of a model to a file with another? Must I make a GDL of it? Current example: a porch railing that we will use in lots of different models. How best to transfer it from one model to another?
many thanks..!</T>

You could make a library part out of it, but a better solution would be to save the rail out as a module file and then it can be merged into a new file.

that sounds like the right idea...how do I save it out as a module? do you mean, build it in its own, external model, save in as its own /pln, and then import it as needed?
or is there a more refined function?

Select your items in plan and then FILE menu > MODULES & XREF-S > SAVE SELECTION AS MODULE...

You can also simply copy and paste from one PLN to another.
why, so you can! how delightfully simple. I thought that since you could only have one AC model open at a time, you couldn't copy and paste...a little more laborious, but not too shab, overall. I'll try the other trick, making a module, as well.
Many thanks!

You can only have one file open in Archicad at any one time (and as you discovered you can copy, close the file, open a new one and paste).

But there is nothing stopping you having 2, 3 or 4 Archicads running at the same time (except you machine specs), all with different plans open.
Just make a copy (or copies) of the ArchiCAD application file. Works for multiple Plotmaker app.s too.

Be careful with multiple Plotmakers. I once tried to plot from two different sessions to two different plotters, and found out that both sessions read the same settings. When I changed the plotter in the second session, all my plots went to the same plotter!

Like Barry Said, just open another session of the Application. The only limit I believe is the amount of RAM. I often have (2) AC sessions open at one time, along with MS Outlook, MS Excel, Internet Expl, and Plotmaker.

Windows allows you to simply run multiple copies just by running the program for a second/third time.
No need to copy applications as with the Macs.
