solid operations

why do my solid operations look fine in section, but don't show up at all in plan? i'm doing a building with two pieces of curtain walling angled out at 3 degrees and i'm using a whacking great roof to subtract from them. it works fine in 3d and section, but the plan shows no effect.

SEO's don't register in plan views

At present, solid operations have no effect on elements in plan.

The plan view is a schematic drawing and not a direct image of the model unlike the sections and (obviously) the 3D views. It is essentially composed of 2D elements which have 3D properties.

It will probably be a while before this is possible.

that presents a problem then! is there any sort of a work around that i can do to make my plans usable? any kind of horizontal section or something?

Workaround / Trick / Tip #1 (patch tool - keeps SEO editable)

1. Select just the element(s) of interest and view in 3D, top view (rotated to look like plan), with internal engine and hidden line mode.

2. Flat marquee the hidden line view and copy, be sure to use (default) "SCALED DRAWING", select Edges, Hatching as you prefer (it is one way to get hatching onto a slab), and remove redundant lines.

3. In 2D, draw a thin marquee around the offending element(s), create a new patch (ctrl-; ), open the patch object, turn on all fragments, open the 2D symbol, put a hotspot at a relevant position, delete all geometry, paste your linework from the clipboard and drag it to align to the hotspot you placed. Close the patch ... voila. You may have to play with opaque fills and extra hotspots in the 2D symbol to make it work in as desired.

Workaround / Trick / Tip #2: Custom GDL object

1. Select just the element(s) of interest and view in 3D, top view (rotated to look like plan).

2. File | GDL Objects | Save 3D Model As ... and save as object (first icon - chair), remove redundant lines, and editable GDL.

3. Place and open a copy of the object (it is the default object for the object tool at this point - so placing, selecting, and then opening is the fastest way to edit). Open the 2D Symbol and edit to fine-tune as desired.

4. If a top-view isn't what you want, use a cutting plane to cut through the object before saving as GDL.

Note that the internal engine does not display the same contour lines as the OpenGL engine. Whatever you are viewing in the 3D window, the GDL symbol is saved as if it was internal engine and hidden line. (You can change that to wireframe with some GDL, but then the symbol isn't visually editable anymore.) To test the above steps, I substracted half a sphere from a boxy slab. With OpenGL, wireframe, the facets of the sphere show as lines. With the internal engine, none of these contours show - I just have a circle/semicircle for the edge of the subtraction.

Yeah, none of these is how we should have to do it...

If the only cutting elements are the roofs, you can trim your curtain wall objects to the same roofs. The only disadvantage is that it is not live as SEO, so you will have to cut again if the cutting plane moves. If the objects are changed, no problem - the cutting plane stays where it was.

As for the plan representation - the cutting by the roofs might be sufficient. Please post a screenshot of what you get and what you want.

i've tried using a roof trim, and this is even worse. not only does it not update the plan, it also doesn't cut the slab at an angle. what i'm looking for is 2 pieces of curtain wall, slanted out at 3 degrees and then intersecting at the corner. i can just about get away with it if i put the ends at the top point of the window (as it gets shorter as it goes along this isn't ideal) is ther a plugin that will deal with it or something? the other problem i'm having is that it's leaving green lines on the ends of the lines when i render it.

Yes, for cutting the slab you have to use SEO.
