I'm curious if ArchiCad 10 has changed the Display Options regarding composites so that you can shut off particular elements (wall bd, ply, finish) and leave only framing for the plan view, but turn on those "finish" elements in section and elevation. I REALLY hope so. That right there would justify the upgrade (not that I don't already think its well worth it).

Not that I know of and I would truly enjoy that feature. I might even start to use more complex composites. That aside the 10 upgrade is well worth it. There are many many features that you will instantly love and will save you countless hours down the road...

This is the oft requested Core Only display option that alas did not make the AC10 feature list. Here's an aging poll. On the same page you'll find my easy workaround, made easier yet by ArchiCAD 10's pen sets.

Totally insane. Even more insane? Turning on reference lines only leaves the composite line hotspots at wall intersections (AC 9 only. I have not found a way to show reference lines only in 10).

Not being able to show just the structural cores is the biggest complaint I get from consultants.

this is indeed a very very big problem. I prefer to just draw the structural cores.

There is a very large vote for the Core Only option, though it seems that the main reason is for putting out backgrounds to consultants. There is a workaround for this purpose that seems to satisfy most of the people I have worked with, and it is automatic once set up.

The DWG translator can be set to place the wall separator lines onto a different layer. I usually use A-WALL-STUD.N (in rough conformance with the NCS) which is not a layer that I use in regular ArchiCAD practice. This way the engineers can turn off the A-WALL-EXTR and A-WALL-INTR and they have their core only background to work from.

Are there other purposes for Core Only that this does not serve?

There are a number of users (a minority, true) who do there own structural drafting and for these folks (occasionally I'm one) being able to turn off the composite skins is a major wish.
