there is another way of doing this that may or may not be useful to some of you:

the visibility of the special menu is stored as a preference in your home library: ~/Library/Preferences/com.graphisoft.ac2284INT.plist (where "...2284INT..." is the exact build of archiCAD that you're using).

there is a developer tool called "Property List Editor" that allows you to open, edit and re-save these preference list files (plist) from any application. the developer tools themselves can be installed using the installer found in ./Applications/Installers/Developer Tools/ - and can be found on any default installation of recent versions of OSX.

once installed, double-click the plist file of your choice and edit away. the one for the file above is attached as a screenshot showing where to change the special menu visibility. but remember: do not edit these files with the application open because your changes may get overwritten by the application itself next time you quit it!

this is where you can also do the 'defaults write' for the slow navigation across networks issue from a GUI . . .

<T>Hi everyone!

Thanks, Juan</T>

Juan,
I was told by GS US tech support that in AC 8
the special menu is enabled by pressing option + command
when launching AC. This will enable the special menu permanently
until upon launching AC one presses these keys again which disables
the special menu.
This is unlike previous versions where pushing these keys only
enabled the special menu for the current session and to enable it
permanently one had to use resedit.
HTH,
