Roof Rake Fills in AC 10

I have a fill type that I use for elevations/section views to show the facia board without having to actually model it. In AC9 it worked great, but in 10 it does not. See Image. Notice the blue lines on the rakes. You can see in the AC9 image that on the eave, it shows correctly, and still does in 10. But the rake in 10 is clearly wrong. Anyone know why this does this and how to fix it? I am currently having to take the fill out leaving a big blank rake. I don't like that.

When you draw the fill do you have it set for project origin or fill origin ?

What fill are you using? I have always gone back and drawn lines in on the fascia's. It would be great to eliminate that step (if it still works in 10)

Why not model the rakes? With SEO's it is quite simple. 1. Drag a copy of the roof about a foot past the gable. 2. Use the - on the pet pallet & get rid of most of the copied roof. 3. drag the resulting smaller roof back over the original roof by the thickness of the rake (3/4") 4. Use command 9 and lower the copied roof by height of the rake (2") 5. use SEO's to subtract copied roof from original roof. 6. put copied roof on a layer that is hidden (we have a layer called SEO that is always hidden). Now the model is correct, elevations and 3D are correct. All of the above takes no longer than 30 seconds. Mirroring a copy for other similar roofs is even quicker.

It looks like a change/flaw/bug in the way AC10 maps the roof edge material. I doubt there is a fix short of posting a bug report to GS. It might be worth testing different roof angles to see how the material is being mapped.

If you insist on drawing it, check whether the fill display is vectorial (seems like it is), the way you do your fill, the fill linkage (to origin or to fill origin) and, last but not least, if it is a symbol fill, the symbol.

I would model it ...

Good Question.
#1 - We only do front end 'wow' stuff so it only needs to look good (not be exact or even right). I have created a material 'Roof Edge - Grey' that is created from a picture of an actual roof edge. It has the drip edge, shadow, & fascia and looks very, very real from a slight distance. This is just fine for our 3D representation and flyarounds. But when we need to print out some plans, or even just elevations, I want the fascia to look good too, so I connected my 'roof edge fill' (simple horizontal lines at the location of the drip edge and fascia board) to the 'Grey Roof Edge' material and it was perfect in AC9. No matter the roof pitch/slope, the lines would always follow as long as the roof was mitered. Now not so in AC10.

#2 - It needs to be fast. Most of what we do on this front end is 'wow' the customer into buying, then we take the time to do a full job and that includes roof rakes and multiple fascia boards. I've never taken the time to figure a 'fast' way of modeling the fascia. I'll play around with your ideas here and see if I can make it work.

Its not clear if you are applying a 2d fill or using vectorial fills automatically on the model surface.
If the later I assume you have tried this - Design> Align 3D texture>set direction

Definitely a problem here
After a test i cant get the texture in 3d to change direction.
Also the vectorial texture when applied to a roof edge positions it self oddly. with the texture running from opposing corners, if you change the thickness of the roof the hatch changes direction

Original hatch was horizontal lines.

You have a few problems here:

- if you are using the fill as a part of the material, then the material mapping is going haywire

- if you are drawing the fill, then either the fill orientation or the symbol size is wrong

You can do this with TrussMaker as a lib part in the same time it takes you to do the fills ...

It's looking more and more like a bug. Do the fills always orient diagonally across the edge of the roof regardless of angle?

I use the same technique for quick/prelim presentation of stacked fascia for line drawings (including 3D hidden line with vectorial hatching). It always worked in 9 for me, but has been failing in 9 for a friend recently. I found it was failing during 10 beta testing, but not in a way that I could consistently reproduce. The default ('reset' if necessary) material mapping should orient the fill and material at the same angle as the roof.

If you can come up with a small example that always reproduces the problem, send the PLA to tech support with a bug report please. (Since you're in the US, fill in the form at tr.graphisoftus.com )

The material never seems to ahve a problem so long as the roof is mitered. Just the section/elevation 2D fill that is connected to the material.

I'd have to do some research to get any useful data out of it. And right now I'm just too busy.

yes change the angle and the hatch changes too. Only at zero degrees does the hatch act as expected.
