1. Measure the original

2. Model it; save as library part

If you can't measure it, you will need something like ArchiFacade to convert the photos to elevations, and then eyeball it ...

Good luck!

HTH

1) draw everything using walls, slabs or combination.
2)make sure the elements are in their proper z coordinate.
2a) All this is done in the story view drawn as it looks in elevation
3) Go to the 3D view and using the window settings get the model to be shown in top view, this is the tricky part until you get use to it. Remember that you drew it in elevation on the story window, so you have to choose the front elevation icon instead of the roof icon.
4)After you are sure you have the object looking as a top view, select all and then choose from File- GDL Objects- Save 3D Object As-
What will you be doing with the 3D model?
if it is only for elevations I would draw them in 2d (make a library part for multitple instances)
If it is for a rendering then you will need to model more accurately.
Model only with enough detail as you need.
No, I mean ArchiCAD. You can model all of it quite easily, using slabs and walls and meshes; or Profiler as you rightly noted later.

patricprz wrote:
how would i save it as a library part?

Ouch ... weel, the PDF called Intro to Object Making is in C:\Program Files\Graphisoft\ArchiCAD 9\Graphisoft Documentation ... it is all spelled out there. 124 pages from the GDL guru, DNC, himself. Next best thing to the GDL CookBook, or maybe the first step to it?

patricprz wrote:
think i will do it all in FormZ, it s a shame though.... i would have liked to use AC.

This is going the easy way. So, what is the model supposed to be used for?

If you don't know how, the word training comes to mind ... if the resources and advice found here are not enough.
the purpose:
I need to draw the existing building and then the proposed with an additional story which is identical to the rest of the building. It will be used for fundraising. Although i only need to model the elevation facing the road i would like to include it in the working drawings as well.

Can you rotate objects around the X or Y axis? For example if i draw a ornamental lintel with the slab tool in plan view, how do i then rotate it around the X axis so i can use it in elevation?

Does anybody know of modelling tutorials for AC?
(It is all good and well to point me to Archiforma, but my boss has already paid thousands for a AC9 license and if I tell him now that we need to buy another piece of software to draw elevations of existing buildings in 3D he would tell me to go where the sun dont shine)

I am 100% sure on how to do it all in Form Z, but I i would like to learn how to use Archicad for the whole lot. In a 3 man band office doing your own GDL sripting seems excessive, then even Autocad seems user friendly.

The tutorials that come with AC do not cover modelling.
Thanks for everybodies help so far!
Hit the F1 key. The online documentation for nine includes a whole section on Object Making without GDL. Work through this and you should grasp how to create stuff on the flat, use the 3D window to tilt it in the proper orientation and save it as GDL objects.

Make the object in plan then view the elements in 3D changing the orientation to match that of the proposed object ( generally elevation view from the top) While the 3D window is open save (as object),
Easy

Alternatively you can exit the actual script using the ROTx command - Suggest you read the GDL manaual if you want to get invovled in that.

Patricprz,
You seem to have done everything right but are having trouble
with the final step in the 3D window.
AC will make an object from the contents of the 3D window but how
it makes the object is dependant on the view angle settings in the
the 3D window. Specifically, Image->3D projection settings where
you specify whether the view is axonometric or orthographic
(meaning side view or top or bottom view).
In the case of your lintel you have probably drawn it as a slab
in the plan as it would appear in elevation.
If you view your slab in the 3D window with the projection settings
set to dimetric axonometric with camera angle set at 270° you
will see the slab lying on the ground facing up.
To have AC make the object so that it is rotated about the "X" axis +90°
You have to adjust the projection settings so that the view of the
object in the 3D window is the same as how the object should appear
in plan view (top view).

In this case you must do the following in the 3D window's
projection settings.
Set the view to "side view" (face-on gable end view icon) and
drag the camera icon to 90° (top of circle).
Now you are looking at the lintel as it would appear in plan view
(top orthographic view). This tells AC how to rotate the new object
in space the way you want it.
Now save the contents of the 3D window as a GDL object.
HTH,
Djordje,
I have the Mac US version of AC 9 (just got it) and there is
in the Archicad 9 folder a folder named "Graphisoft Documentation"
but the only thing in it are 3 PDFs relating to MSA.
In my previous post I noted that I found a folder in the AC 9 CD
named "Graphisoft Documentation" that had several PDFs including
Intro to object making.pdf.
I did a search on my Mac for the term "object making" with zero results.
Does the pc version of the program install these PDFs somewhere
and the Mac installer does not?
thanks for all the help. but i do think the process should be simplified.
i dont understand why one can not rotate objects around there central axis. it would be a useful feature.
how would you for example place an object level on a ramped surface?

OK to make it simple, you draw a slab.
You select your slab, go to the 3D view menu and choose to see the edge of your slab. Then in the File menu > GDL Object > Save as and once you chose a name, you have a new library part.
Once inserted in your drawing, you will see the edge of the slab as if your slab had turned into a wall.
With the slab tool you can easily draw a lintel, a table, whatever you want.
If you wish to rotate that library part, you have to open it (File menu>GDL objects>Open object), click on the 3d script and add these lines at the top of it :
rotx rotation_x
roty rotation_y
rotz rotation_z
and save.
Next time you will open up the library part you can choose the way you want to rotate the object.
Hope it helped.
