Look at the window in a section window cut through the window. If you play with the setting of the rebate for example to 2" you'll notice that it is the clear height between the bottom of the window opening and the underneath of the inside sill.
Tell me why is it called rebate "width", when this sounds like a Height?

Rabate, in this instance, is referring to the enlarged wall opening to allow the exterior sill to sit below the interior sill.

Rebate, to lessen, is a variant of rabbet, Rabbet is from Old French <S></S>rabat<E></E> meaning a recess in a wall.

Anyone have an architectural dictionary?
Anyone have an architectural dictionary?

I don't have an Architectural Dictionary but I have a rabbet plane.

The section in the window settings box shows a "modern" type of plant-on sill. Therefore, there is no rebate, just a difference in the heights of the sill and stool. True Joiners shake their heads at this sort of thing. When one rebates a board with a rabbit plane or router table or tablesaw the "depth" of the rebate is referred to. The "width" is the width, the distance of the cut from the open end or edge (rabbet). You might say that the height that you set your tablesaw blade could then be referred to as the height of the rebate, as Jay so anxiously desires. If that becomes the case just imagine how the wags in the shop will have it: " how tall do you like your rabbet?"

Someday ( my bet is on Cadimage ) we'll have a door & window library that allows us to fully customize these objects to match the way that we actually build them. Stairs & balustrades too. Then too, the detail tool will be a really useful tool, actually creating details from objects, not just tracking where we have placed our line & fill 2D workings.

Rebate: a negative from a negative, as in " The Ministry of Energy has just announced a Fuel Surcharge Rebate Program." Or: deducting something from a positive something, as in making shiplap boards.

Since we have the Profiler tool in Archicad might it make sense to refer to the Solid Element Operations Tool as the <S></S>Rebater<E></E> ?

I knew I would get attention. Even after that last post I thought to myself "actually it is a depth. Please believe me, no anxiety here though.

I believe you here either, even after 3 Americanos.
Seriously, wouldn't you expect that in LA rabbet would be pronounced with a Dubya ? As in, " Oh, you wascally Wabbet !" I hear that's how F. Gehry pronounces it, and he's from Tarana originally. For a project like he got out of it I guess you pronounce it whatever way the client desires, eh.
Must be a tough go for Erika, not only problems with the vernacular but she brings up these FRENCH terms!

The rebate width is the dimension the sash is set back into the frame.

A bigger question for me is why this dimension doesn't even show up in my windows under the "graphical" window settings tab but shows up only under the parameters tab?
