Find the Cutplane command.

Position it at the required height.

Activate 3D Cutaway.

Go to the 3D window, look down on the plan (the icon that looks like the roof plan)

Save the view; it will keep the cutting planes too!

Shade and render to taste ... place in PlotMaker ... done.

He may be thinking of the trick where you save the floor plan as an image file of some type and apply it as the texture map to a slab so you can role it around it 3D. I do something like that with Art*Lantis when I want to look down into model from a perspective and see the floor plan there with all the dimensions, annotation, doors, windows, other pictures, etc...too. This is very easy in Art*Lantis because you can stretch the map of the floor plan in real time and make it fit the model it is setting on.

Sometimes I cut the walls off at about 2" high and show them on a slab which has the floor plan as a map on it. It helps the walls stand out on a 2D floor plans being shown in 3D.

this is a very bad example...just to give you the idea.

There is a similar trick where the floor plan is:
saved as a DXF,
then opened as a GDL Object,
saved into the ArchiCAD Library,
then placed in the floor plan view as an object.

The resultant lines will be visible in a 3D view and renderings.

This method absolutely maintains the size of the underlying elements.

Hi Dwight

I have been exploring the possibilities of showing the floorplan in a 3D view cut-section, and did it the way as u described:

There is a similar trick where the floor plan is:
saved as a DXF,
then opened as a GDL Object,
saved into the ArchiCAD Library,
then placed in the floor plan view as an object.

The resultant lines will be visible in a 3D view and renderings.

I was able to insert the floorplan which I converted into an ArchiCAD Library object (.gsm) and re-insert it, where it is visible in the 3D view. The floorplan consists of lines, hatches and text. However, some problems surfaced: -

1) While the plan looks perfectly fine on the PLAN VIEW, the text is not visible in the 3D VIEW.

2) I tried rendering an image, but the plan does not appear.

Any ideas on where I could have gone wrong during the process? Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion. I guess that is the only way to show the 2D plan in rendered views.

However, my problem with the text missing in 3D view remains. Is there any way I can send u the .gsm object I created for you to look at it? I have a hunch its due to my graphics card. 😕
If you need to render the image with the plans & its text visible as a 2-d item :

(As Steve Jepson hinted at) - Try converting the plan to a raster image (using publisher to convert to tiff or jpeg. You can even try pdf via other graphics package). The quality of this conversion will make a big difference.

Create a new material using the image as its texture.
Assign this material to a slab or mesh below the model. You need to ensure that the size of the slab and rendered image are the same. The image also need to be aligned correctly.

If you render a 3d view of the image, the 2d plan will be the texture of the base material.

While finding a way to get about achieving the desired effect, I came across the "TechTip Contest Winner of the Month of July 2002" Submitted by Bert Nijs from Belgium. He gave a suggestion on how we could do it in ArchiCAD V7.0.

"I came up with this trick when I was searching for a way to show a ground-floorplan in 3D and resurrect only those parts which were of particular interest. This can be done in the following way:

1)Make a DWG-file of your ground-floorplan
2) Open the DWG-file as an object
3) Check for the 3D information. Choose a non-binary 3D Object, if you'd like to adjust soem elements of the drawing (Note: this can be somewhat tricky)

The object will contain the same information in both 2D and 3D - just what we need."

In his method, he created a plot file of the floorplan (.plt), and opened the file in PlotMaker, where everything will more-or-less be exploded.

I tried doing that too, but it seems like the text does not want to show up in 3D VIEW.

It is quite frustrating, and I really dunno how to resolve this. In the .gsm file I sent you, were you able to see text in the 3D VIEW?

Hi TomWaltz

I think the problem is not having the text to show up in 3D, but more like the SOLID FILLS and HATCHES to show.

Text are exploded into solid fills, and it is the solid fills that disappear in 3D View. My dimensions have a fill at the ends and sub-ends, and these fills do not appear either.

Does anyone know how to make it show in 3D view?

there is way where you save the pln as plot file, open this in plotmaker then save as
a DWG then import it back into ArchiCAD as an object.
This way the text is converted into vectors
Havent done it for years but it works well
