One remedy is to invoke a stretch command with a shortcut; CTRL-H is the default, I think, I have mine set to Alt-S (easier to reach). works with lines and walls, but not polylines for some reason only GS would know.

<T>I've come across a small, but irritating problem in AC 10 that I can't quite figure out.

When I select the end of a 2d line and try to stretch it, if the end of the line is touching anything else (for example another line) the other line or object will always be selected.

If I have the line tool selected and shift/select the line I want to stretch it remains selected and I can do my edit.

I did check the mouse settings and cursor snap range is 3 pixels like always.

Any thoughts?
Don Lee: How do you stretch and is it a normal line or polyline?

I don't have this problem what I know.

But I normally marked the line I want to stretch, then I user ctrl+h command to stretch, not only click and endnod. (Like s2art said)

I have run into this occasionally. It seems to be a UI/display/mouse problem. Sometimes a click and hold will do it. I think it has to do with whether the system thinks you are clicking to edit an existing element (and thus display the pet palette) or are choosing a new element. It seems worse on some machines than others which is why I suspect system/UID issues. It may be that GS is not trapping for events quite as they should, but I suspect the problem is more subtle.

hey, i get that too! not always though, it seems a little erratic. i do mostly use the shortcut for stretching/adjusting a line rather than grabbing its endpoint but sometimes it is neccessary to grab a point of a slab or a fill that may be overlapping with something else and then i just end up swearing loudly at the machine!
i have got around it by invoking the tool of the object i am trying to edit... but there are those times where i just wanna pull my hair out!

Always use the tool of the object you are working with, it's a basic knowledge of Archicad.
You don't NEED to, but it will solve your problem if you do. The newer versions of Archicad removed the need, but the program seems be happier if you do.

My personal working habit is to eye dropper the element before I try to edit it so that the tool is highlighted. It might be an extra click, but it saves me from fighting with the problem you describe.

You know, as far back as I can remember (back to AC 4.5) you could select a line then click on an endpoint and stretch it without having the line tool selected.

I certainly ca work around it, but why should I have to change what I have for many years? It's such a simple thing. It might be some sort of system thing (OSX and AC10) that has been suggested.
indeed, i've been editing elements without their tool selected since i started using AC (v6 i think). I know it gets over the problem described if you do have the tool selected, but if you're supposed to do this then why have the functionality of editing without the tool activated in the first place? and then have it so sometimes it works and others it doesn't!?
anyway, no harm done, i know when it works and when it doesn't and what to do when it doesn't. it was just really obvious in ac10 that when elements overlap, editting without the tool active doesn't work as it has done in previous versions... hense the hair pulling.

Having this problem not just with lines, but anything where you need to toggle between moving and stretching a selected object (fills, text labels, layout windows). I tried selecting the tool first after reading earlier posts, and hesitating an extra beat on the pet palette, to no avail. It's exceptionally erratic which makes it more annoying.

I'm running a mactel which I thought might make a difference, but the two others in my office are having no problems on their mactels.

Any other suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.
I just transitioned to 10, was not having this problem with 9.

Actually, I found a tip on another part of the site that there seems to be a bug with the pet palette setting option being set to "follow cursor" (although those people were getting different symptoms)
I re-set it to go to a "preferred location" and it solved the problem!
Thanks though
