Tip: Screen Capture in ArchiCAD

This is just a quick tip on capturing screen shots, given the recent questions on the subject.

It should be made aware that screen captures can be completed entirely within ArchiCAD. Instructions are for on a PC, but the same theory applies for a Mac:

1. Capture screen shot using the prtsc function, usually something like shift+prtsc for an entire screen or shift+alt+prtsc for the current window/dialog;

2. Paste (ctrl+v) into an ArchiCAD window (floor plan/detail, whatever);

3. Note it up however you like using ArchiCAD notation tools;

4. Create a new publishing set with the Publishing Properties set to Save;

5. Drag the viewpoint with the image into that Publisher Set and set the format to JPEG or PNG or whatever image type you like;

6. Hit Publish.

Then you can upload it here to AC-Talk. While you are limited to the amount of work you can do on the actual image, compared to an image editing program like Photoshop, it goes to show that you can use ArchiCAD for this purpose and you may learn something new along the way.

On a Mac...

Use Apple + Shift +4 and click and drag to include the area you want

or

if you want the entire screen (a bit erxcessive if you ask me) use Apple+Shift +3

Then place the image in ArchiCAD with the figure tool and then follow what Link has written.

I had never done a Prt Scr with a Shift+alt keys (or even a Shift key).

When doing this Windows XP asked if I wanted to make it a "high" contrast view. (for the visually impaired and all) I said yes. I now have black backgrounds for everywhere. Scrambling through my display properties trying to fix this.

I am willing not to do this again if someone will help. I have not done a shut-down re-boot, but headed there.

Sorry for the confusion Jay, that's why I said 'something like' as it is different for different hardware. On my laptop I need to use Fn+prtsc or Fn+Alt+Prtsc. Other desktops may just need prtsc alone or alt+prtsc for current winodw/dialog.

Looks like you'll need to adjust your Accessibility options inthe control panel. A simple Google search will provide help if you need it.

Thanks for the quick response. I will figure this out. I have always used the Prt Scr button alone and just pasted into MS-Paint (Like I did with the attachment above). It brings in both of the screens that I use and I crop there. Annotation and arrows are a bit more difficult. The AC option may prove better for the notating

It was in the Accessibility Options, Thanks.

Back to the world of Not-so-High Contrast.

It seems that it is just my left Alt + left Shift keys. I unchecked this option.

The ALt + Shift is nice for just capturing current active window, Thanks.

Also for those on the Mac:
Go to Applications > Utilities > and open Grab. This little application gives you screen capture options for Selection, Window, Screen and Timed Screen. The resulting file is in the tiff format, you can then use Preview (or another application) to save the file in gif, jpg or png format for posting, or import the image into ArchiCAD for notation as mentioned above.

have found Grab to give good results. Process is very easy. I have Grab in the Dock and use it all the time.

For "on the fly" 3D communication with clients try this method:

Fast and simple 3D window screen captures:

Place your marquee on the 3D image, hit copy, and then paste in any application that accepts images including email. Works in both 3D window and also rendered Lightworks windows. Note marquee capture method does not work on "the screen" nor in 3D document views - only inside AC's 3D windows.

Once the image is in the email, drag the corner to quickly re-size images.

Skitch is a free download that can do screen captures and also lets you do markups with arrows, lines, text etc.

Resizing it on the screen quick to enlarges/reduces image for saving at different sizes.

It is available for multiple platforms
