<R>It may well be user error.

I'm drawing an old masonry fort with lots of vaults, etc. The first image is the model view of the parade side. As you can see there's a large vaulted opening in the front wall.

In the second image (next post) is the plan view - and the wall appears solid despite the fact that it's been cut. I've set the floor plan cut plane to 3', which is definitely below the arch. Why is it still showing solid?</R>

Looks to me like the arch is not exactly an "arched opening" in a super-thick wall. If it were, it would probably show up OK on the floor plan with the wall displayed as "symbolic cut." It appears that you're using some sort of curved roof object to make the arch and/or using solid element operations to produce the archway. That's cool and all, but in plan view it would probably produce a result like in your second image.

Though I wouldn't recommend this universally, you could try raising your cut plane to 4' or 5' to see if it shows up....

In any case, if you haven't already done this, I would suggest that you model the wall that the arch is in as being 6' thick (or however deep the arch is) and insert an arched opening (it's a door type) into the super-thick wall.

good luck
Well - I modeled everything using SEO ...

I form the vault (which is 40 feet from front to back) using the roof tool. The front wall is only about a foot thick.

Inside the thick vault I build a super thin shell and use that as the operator in the SEO - I need to post a picture of the whole thing ... I'll work on that - it takes a minute or two to render.

The vault needs to be what it is (I'm pretty sure) because I want to study the drainage systems above it.

I'll work on posting that picture.

And of course SEO's don't show, so there's your answer.

I am certain that you can exactly match your vault with a window opening vault.

However, if not, you can achieve a smoother and more controllable vault using the Custom Profile Beam option where you exactly define your vault as a beam shape.

Several peeps recommended using the window/door opening and I tried that. It's appealing because it would be easier AND might cut down on the file size. So I tried that.

Unfortunately neither the arched window opening nor the arched door opening allows you to specify the spring point of the arch nor the radius - or if it does, I don't know where to find these. Also, it doesn't show the thickness of the masonry arch - it's really an outline opening.

The first view shows an SEO of the rear wall. You can see that it's a relatively flat arch using 2 courses of brick. Also the side walls of this opening are skewed (it's an opening for shooting a cannon). I do the SEO then add in those side walls as a separate item.

This was a test to see if I could simplify this thing and just use an arched opening - but as you can see the radius and spring point of the arch don't correspond to the real arch. Or I just don't know how to do that.
Here's something else I found while exploring everyone's suggestions ...

I was re-examining how I built this and started looking at it in wireframe to see how many pieces are in there. A lot of my motivation is to simplify the file so that it's not so cumbersome to render, etc. Also, I initially built this in AC9 and am transferring it to AC11 - not sure if that has any bearing. But, I'm essentially having to rebuild the whole thing. And while I'm at it, it seems like a good time to clean it up because this is one piece that will get repeated in the overall drawing 45 times.

In looking at it in wireframe, there are these weird little objects that I don't understand. They are a part of the larger side walls.

Anyway, I'm as usual confounded and was hoping that the good folks here could shed some light.

True. A real problem sometimes. But if you want to re-use this assembly, you should save a lot of time by making your own custom opening (window/door). The procedure is described in the docs (Help menu) and has been mentioned several times the last week.
