topic Re: ¿News about AC 12? in Modeling

This is not <S></S>exactly<E></E> the place for this post, but my question does have something to do with how GS is responding to the current marketplace, trends, new and potential users.

My son is now in his third year studying architecture at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in central California (despite my wishes that he have prosperous and stress free future as an orthodontist). Cal Poly SLO has a large and well respected school of architecture that is currently ranked fourth in the US.

One of every 5 architects in California and 1 of every 20 architects in the United States is a Cal Poly graduate. So the school is very influential if only because of the sheer number of its graduates. And guess what? ArchiCad is virtually unheard of at Cal Poly.

I believe one instructor has taken classes in AC, but it is not taught in any classes and only a handful of the students use it even though a free student version is available. Most have not even heard of it.

For design, students are free to use whatever they choose. Many use Sketch Up (my son has grown to dislike it's limitations), but the hot software of choice is now Rhino. Form Z was popular, but its unusual interface and steep learning curve has made Rhino the preferred modeler.
More and more students are using Revit as they learned it working in their summer jobs.

If AC had better and especially more intuitive modeling tools, I think it would be a big hit in the schools. Look how popular the Mac Books have become here in the US. My son has done well with AC even though it's though it can't do what Rhino can as a modeler. Then again he is not yet doing "biomorphic" buildings

My question is, why isn't GS doing more to promote AC in the schools?
Maybe they are elsewhere, but if every Cal Poly grad knew (and presumably loved) ArchiCad, well that would be 1 of every 20 architects in the US. What a user base! More users, more money for R&D, less complaints, lower license costs...........
Ok, here it goes: I heard (replace w/ hope to be exact) that -
1) the lightworks engine now includes global illumination and final gather - plus the ability to work w/ the all the LWA materials.
2) there is a dedicated tool for creating generic 3d forms & shapes w/ all the typical 3d tools available in modern day 3d modelers, and the ability to set what its function would be (wall, roof, slab, etc...)
3) worksheet tool is like any section elevation tool - it can be a live view of the plan or section/ elevation with the option to make it a "drawing", as opposed to the detail tool which is strictly 2d.
4) OpenGL is improved to match all the abilities of sketchup with realtime shadows, and no "dark side of the moon" effects.
5) grid tool works flawlessly - create / delete only in the plan, and able to adjust visibility, size, etc. in each view separately...
6) it's possible to copy paste detail views from other projects - which would bring in the corresponding detail viewpoint, and its contents with the view settings to the new project.
7) archiglazing is included
8 ) archistair is included
9) and last but not the least, there would be a secret bonus feature that will make every revit user drool with envy

maybe I'm a little bit too optimistic...?

Yes, my turn.
I don't mind if the revit users are green of envy or not. I only want to make the most of AC. ¿With a new version? Yes.
Dwight, I'm absolutely fed up with you spreading all these lies and dis-information...
Something to do with semantic webs, OWLS, SWOPS, GARMS, SPLODGES, TWONGLES, POGS, FLOPS, SNOGS and FLOBITS* or something.

(*I made the last 6 up, btw )

I've also heard something about 'stairs' and 'elevations' being enhanced too, but to what extent, who knows?

And while we are discussing fantasy features, as I was chatting to the main man Dominic Gallello whilst giving me a lift in his Graphisoft branded biplane he personally uses to spread the word of ArchiCAD around the world, he exclusively told me they were implementing technology that allowed you to print full size 3D models directly from your standard printer without any extra attachments.

Which could be useful, I thought.

¿Why "absurd fantasy"? ¿Isn't possible?

Not absurd. Not only possible...

It's called the marquee tool or...

Find & Select or...

Pet Palette or...

Info Box or...

3D snaps, constraints, etc.

Of course there are many more but not necessarily all drool worthy.

Have another on me.

The only reason why the above might be a problem is marketing - as traditionally Graphisoft does not recognize a need for any.

And, I would REALLY like that Graphisoft stops looking at Revit and remembers that they have a software to make. The same one that Revit copied to incredible lengths, including the brochure, when it was being born. Bashing Architectural Desktop notwithstanding.

We don't need two flavours of the same unfinished bull*s*h*i*t but two distinct packages based on the same philosophy. Why? Because 90% of the world is awed whatever they see - Archicad or Revit - as they can't think further than a stack (roll, folder) of drawings and drafting them. Heck, quite a few people here can't - sorry, guys, the truth hurts. I am a moron that wants impossible, yes I know, it also hurts.

I still have to wait and see anything Autodesk working with anything else Autodesk smoothly - as they don't develop, they buy development. And coordination is not their strongest point.

So, basically ... enjoy what you use, and use it well. If you are forced to use A or R, learn how to use it. Changing the software won't teach you how to use it properly.

May the VB be with us ...

... or BIM, as you like it.

If you're interested in possible features in AC12, don't forget the legendary press release that managed to confuse more than inform - here
I heard it was only going to be a 3D hologram, projected onto the building site. 3D printing will not be implemented until V16
