i thought this post below was relevant ...if not, just complain and will delete immediately.

Thanks to you all guys.
Let tell you what we are doing after all.

The project itself is a Terminal building for a new international airport. so its about 130.000. m2.

The basic solution we adapted was, split the main plp file into 6 new plp files:
1. Interiors (walls, ceilings, furniture, storefronts, etc...)
2. Structure (for Concrete and steel structure coordination)
3. Envelope ( for the all the exterior walls, claddings, glazing work, Roof, etc..)
4. Services Coordination (HVAC, fire, electrical, wet services, security, baggage handling, coordination)
5. Procurement (for all the documentation regarding specs, quantities, etc...)
6. Site ( for the terrain, roads, and the general exterior works.)

Of course all the Layout books are in different files, with the drawings linked to the specific plp where the view was saved. (... we have just missing those old pmk files.... quick access to a view trough a stand alone file)

The plp can see the others plp information with the hotlink, and not everyone need to see the services or the site, so we basically linked the structure, interiors and envelope.

The graphical Standards have been coordinated manually almost every friday. Is not that difficult after all.

Everything is working good, but still id like to warn you about some thinks that doesn't work 100%:

1. Grid Lines:
Sometimes you have 6 or 7 grid lines on the sections, some times you don't have any.
BUT we have discovered that if you want to see grid lines on your section viewpoint, and the grid lines are not in your workspace or in a hotlink, you have to set the Status of the section to Auto rebuild, it doesn't matter if you rebuild it manually, it doesn't work. Only auto rebuild works... and is not 100 % sure.

2. Layout books:
Updating Views from different PLP files that are 60mb (+) size its tricky sometimes. for floor plans details and worksheets works almost at 90%, but for general sections, you can wait for 1 hour to rebuild it and maybe an hour or 1 day to get it into the layout book. It is still a problem. That's why i would like to use PMK files again. This gives you the chance of recovering old versions of the project even in 2D.

3. Xref Layers:
To be honest, working with so many consultants and contractors... coordinating structure services, details, etc... you can't always be sure that some one will forget to remove those layers..... Once those layers are in your plp you are lost. you can not erase them. Right now we can count around 450 Xref layers and 220 Project related layers. What a mess.

Just to finalise this, I love this software, even that Revit 2009 has a very nice Rendering engine, Even that Is not popular as Autocad. But we need more Reliability....
R E L I A B I L I T Y.....

Ok, here it goes: I heard (replace w/ hope to be exact) that -
1) the lightworks engine now includes global illumination and final gather - plus the ability to work w/ the all the LWA materials.
2) there is a dedicated tool for creating generic 3d forms & shapes w/ all the typical 3d tools available in modern day 3d modelers, and the ability to set what its function would be (wall, roof, slab, etc...)
3) worksheet tool is like any section elevation tool - it can be a live view of the plan or section/ elevation with the option to make it a "drawing", as opposed to the detail tool which is strictly 2d.
4) OpenGL is improved to match all the abilities of sketchup with realtime shadows, and no "dark side of the moon" effects.
5) grid tool works flawlessly - create / delete only in the plan, and able to adjust visibility, size, etc. in each view separately...
6) it's possible to copy paste detail views from other projects - which would bring in the corresponding detail viewpoint, and its contents with the view settings to the new project.
7) archiglazing is included
8 ) archistair is included
9) and last but not the least, there would be a secret bonus feature that will make every revit user drool with envy

maybe I'm a little bit too optimistic...?

Yes, my turn.
I don't mind if the revit users are green of envy or not. I only want to make the most of AC. ¿With a new version? Yes.
I heard it's the August edition of PlayCAD actually!!!

If you're interested in possible features in AC12, don't forget the legendary press release that managed to confuse more than inform - here

(Discussed here.)

Something to do with semantic webs, OWLS, SWOPS, GARMS, SPLODGES, TWONGLES, POGS, FLOPS, SNOGS and FLOBITS* or something.

(*I made the last 6 up, btw )

I've also heard something about 'stairs' and 'elevations' being enhanced too, but to what extent, who knows?

And while we are discussing fantasy features, as I was chatting to the main man Dominic Gallello whilst giving me a lift in his Graphisoft branded biplane he personally uses to spread the word of ArchiCAD around the world, he exclusively told me they were implementing technology that allowed you to print full size 3D models directly from your standard printer without any extra attachments.

Which could be useful, I thought.

¿Why "absurd fantasy"? ¿Isn't possible?

Not absurd. Not only possible...

It's called the marquee tool or...

Find & Select or...

Pet Palette or...

Info Box or...

3D snaps, constraints, etc.

Of course there are many more but not necessarily all drool worthy.

Have another on me.

The only reason why the above might be a problem is marketing - as traditionally Graphisoft does not recognize a need for any.

And, I would REALLY like that Graphisoft stops looking at Revit and remembers that they have a software to make. The same one that Revit copied to incredible lengths, including the brochure, when it was being born. Bashing Architectural Desktop notwithstanding.

We don't need two flavours of the same unfinished bull*s*h*i*t but two distinct packages based on the same philosophy. Why? Because 90% of the world is awed whatever they see - Archicad or Revit - as they can't think further than a stack (roll, folder) of drawings and drafting them. Heck, quite a few people here can't - sorry, guys, the truth hurts. I am a moron that wants impossible, yes I know, it also hurts.

I still have to wait and see anything Autodesk working with anything else Autodesk smoothly - as they don't develop, they buy development. And coordination is not their strongest point.

So, basically ... enjoy what you use, and use it well. If you are forced to use A or R, learn how to use it. Changing the software won't teach you how to use it properly.

May the VB be with us ...

... or BIM, as you like it.
