vaulted roofs

I am trying to create a simple vaulted porch roof over a entry door to a house, so it is only about 8 feet wide by 6 feet deep with a 1'6" rise at the center. The resulting roof has only three segments and looks very awkward. I don't see where in the roof control panel you can change the segments so that it is a smooth curve.

Those roofs are made finer by increasing the magic wand setting.

However, i suggest you give up entirely on using the roof tool to make this roof element.

Investigate the Complex Profile Tool below the Design Menu. You make a sophisticated fill shape and "Extrude" it with the wall tool. You will have absolute control over the profile and quick editing capabilities.

The COMPLEX PROFILE is the best method to use here. Remember to set priority numbers on the layers appropriately to avoid incorrect joinery.

Also, you can also use the simple CYLINDER SHELL if your room is rectilinear... Some math involved, of course.

Hello Duane. So this is what Saturday night has become.

I have found many users to be flummoxed by the complex profile feature - as if they were bound by the tool name, combined with the Pink Floyd concept "If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding!!!" - You can only make a roof with the roof tool. The complex profile feature really does defy this expectation by returning us to extruded versatile primitives.

I remember when the wall tool got curving capability. [Prior to this, a user needed to make a curved wall using a nightmare of GDL] I was showing a college Archicad class how to make a curved counter top and they were outraged with betrayal when I made a curved 24" wide form and all of the curving millwork using the wall tool. "You can't do THAT! You need to use the SLAB TOOL.

I hope you are doing well... and have had a great holiday!

You are so right about being afraid to think "Outside the Box"... I jumped all over the Complex Profile gadget... In fact probably too much so. I had this great idea that I could use them for Cabinets and Shelving only to find out that all these "Shelf-Walls" would try to heal to my real walls! Yes, a quick switch of the PRIORITIES fixed things up, but then I found that trying to AUTO CLICK Zones in these rooms are bound by the cabinets and not the walls.... uggh. Hmmmm... If we can make some lines ZONE BOUNDARIES, why can't we make some WALLS = NOT zone boundaries!

But we can. Relation to zones box, in the bottom of the wall settings?

Thanks Dwight and Duane. Although I think the topic shifted a bit here, I am going to look into use the wall tool for millwork.
