<T>Somehow I lost the small line of informational instruction for each tool I am using. It used to show up on the bottom left of the screen, just above the start menu. It would say what the next part of each command sequence is....but for some reason it disappeared and I can't figure out how to get it back. It would help if I knew what it was called, but I don't know that either.</T>

I believe you are looking for the Status Bar. It can be found under
Window - Palettes - Status Bar (Towards the top). This is also linked to your Work Environment so you will probably need to up date that as well (I believe it will save with the Palette Schemes).
