Unfortunately, AC 8.* does not allow you duplicate any of the vector Empty Fills.

And you can't create new "Symbol Fills" with an empty clipboard - you have to "Paste" something into the fill edit field.

I guess you could "Rename" the Fill to what you want. Unfortunately, the renamed fill is not transferable into other .PLN files.

<T>I'm trying to create a new fill called "Steel Stud" that will be empty like the "2x10" stud fill. But when I use 2x10 as a start, it automatically uses another fill that isn't blank. How do I create a new fill that is empty?</T>

whenever you create a new symbol fill, archicad places some lines in the fill window as a 'start'!

what you need to do is draw your fill on plan, select and copy it.

when you create a new fill, go to 'paste' and the stuff that archicad puts there gets replaced by your lines . . .
Did you try Attribute manager?

Yes, it doesn't let you merge many of the vector Fills.

I discovered this when I was trying to figure out a work-around for Jay using Attribute Manager.

Agh ...

Merging also does not help much - even if it is in, the order is all mixed up.

Opened some old 5.0 files the other day ... on the plus side, opening them in 8.1 was a breeze, while most of them crashed 7.0R3 (?!??!), on the minus side, you should have seen the fills ... ohmigod ...

Is this a "Bug", I just thought that was how it worked with the stock "Vector Fills".
I sure wish we had more power to edit and add vector fills.

If you draw a wall using the renamed "Steel Stud" fill, then copy/paste it to another .PLN file that doesn't already have a "Steel Stud" fill, it creates the fill for you.

The rename method seems to have solved my problem. If I see any residual effects in the future I'll post them.

To create an empty fill:

"Draw" a hotspot in ArchiCAD. Select it and copy it (to the clipboard with <ctrl>C)

Open the Fill type dialog box
- Create a new symbol fill
- Past in the hotspot.
- Set stroke X1 = 100 and Y2 = 100 (asuming mm)
- Set to Scale independent
- Edit the Bitmapped pattern
Done
