To isolate an element/selection in 3D: select the object(s)/element(s), right click and click "Show Selection/Marquee in 3D". Windows shortcut: F5. Mac shortcut: F4 This is a great way to build objects inside a project as well. Create the object with building tools, isolate it and save as an object.

To isolate something in plan view you would have to place an obejct on its own layer and turn all others off.

If you want to Isolate elements by their Layer, then you can use the Quick Layers Palette.
Select the elements to keep, then click the Hide Other Elements' Layers on the Quick Layers Palette.
Layers of selected elements will be kept visible, all other Layers will be hidden.
