NStocks wrote:
No, he was referring to the current version of AutoCAD and ArchiCAD. He said that AutoCAD has ' required ' 3DS and a few other programs and just labelled it Autodesk... Not to be a ' Mac fan ' but you can quite simply tell that AutoCAD was made to work on a PC, by the layout of the toolbars etc. I think that he only recommends AutoCAD because at least 90% of the students will have Windows' PC's ( 4 of my group have Mac's and are using Bootcamp, Windows 7 and AutoCAD as well as sketchp, but that's because they are influenced by what the tutor has said, in the lecture to 170 students, that is ) and the University have PC's of which they can run AutoCAD for free and use the latest version each year.

Attached is a 5 minute preview of what it will look like in Sketchup, I think that it will look o.k, but it won't have that certain quality that ArchiCAd offers, and I'm not to keen on the section cuts and not sure if it has elevation settings.

How long would it take you to create my model to a ' perfect ' quality ? I'm not asking you to send me the version ( though screenshots would be helpful ) nor asking you to spend your time creating it, I just want an idea of how long a professional can do it.

OK, I've attached some images showing a better quality result, i.e. one that might actually work. I've constructed each segment out of two parts - a part that bends to the curve and a separate flat part where the segments are riveted together. I've bent the profile to a radius of 10,000mm and made each segment 100mm thick. If every segment is to fold cleanly over the previous, the radius will have to increase by 100mm. So I start with the profile of the smallest segment and progressively increase the profile length by 100mm at either end:

1. Extend the polygon edges by 100mm from the previous using the polygon edge offset
2. Create a new elevation profile from the polygon
3. Edit the settings of the new profile - the bending offset will be half the profile length (i.e. radius is half the diameter)
4. It's easier to arrange the segments in plan, so use OBJECTiVE's Rotate to tilt the profile over by 90 degrees (onto its side)
5. I can then use ArchiCAD's ordinary 2D rotate to swivel the next segment into position
6. In this example I'm able to use the same end segment for the fixing point. I create two copies, align it to the segment base, and then use OBJECTiVE's Alignment tool to align the ends with the top and bottom of the curved profile
7. When the segments are all complete, they can be rotated back to the correct plane using OBJECTiVE's Rotate tool
8. The finished result in 3D
9. A close-up of the fixing point

This model looks clean. Constructing the model took about 10-15 minutes, but you could spend a lot longer if you wanted to 'tweak' each profile for just the right look.

<T>I need to draw this model I have made for a project at University. So far I have only drawn a 3D house in ArchiCAD, but that was made up from walls etc. What I want is a basic frame to show the shape and intersection of my model. Which tools etc, would I use to get it 3D</T>

It is quite a challenge, but it can be done.
1 draw the contour with walls
2 place a roof
3 trim to roof
4 make an object (axonmetric top view, save 3D model as)
5 place the object

6 redo for second element, but add a rotation factor in the top of the 3D script (ROTY 10, or ROTX 10 or ROTY 10, which depends on your object)
7 add this line to the 2D script PROJECT2 3,270,1 for correct 2D view
8 you might want to adjust the position in an elevation
9 and so on . . .

good luck!

Great ! What thickness would you use, it's only about 2mm thick so should I just use that ? Did you use the default roof setting, or should I manipulate them from my model, likewise the height of the ' walls' i.e if its 25mm high I would raise the walls 25mm high then put the roof on and trim ?

How would I do the back piece which is just a single curve?

Were suppose to use AutoCAD but I have a Mac and don't want to install windows... Would it be much easier in AutoCAD ?

Thanks very much !

P.S how long did it take you to do that ?

Just measure up your model and use those sizes.
For the back piece use a complex profile.
You can also use this to get the round edges

Ofcourse it is easier with ArchiCAD

Which tool is ' complex profile' from ? Your dialog boxes are quite different from mine ( are you on PC )

How did you do the front piece( first image) so that they overlapped and looked like they would fit in. Do I need to specify each part by the level from next floor option and change that in increments of X ?

I'm very uneducated in CAD and it's up to all of us ( Students) to figure it out by ourselves to a point.... I really appreciate your help

I don't want to be rude, but there is a lot of information about complex profiles in the help files of AC. Go to Help/ArchiCAD Help and do a search on Complex profiles. They can explain it better than I can.

For the objects go to this website <S></S><LINK_TEXT text="http://www.graphisoft.com/education/tra ... uides/#gdl">http://www.graphisoft.com/education/training_guides/#gdl</LINK_TEXT><E></E>
If you dislike GDL, a free utility for rotating elements is:

ArchiRotate, from Cigraph.

It converts Archicad objects into objects that can be tilted without any code writing.

Load the Rotator.gsm object into your library, then in the parameters field you fill in the "Name of library part to rotate" parameter with the library part name u need to rotate - in your case it would be "Shelter 2" according to the object you uploaded. Copy as many instances you need and change the rotate parameters as you need.
