Can anyone tell me how to cut in control joints into a wall, maybe one half inch wide, one half inch deep so they show up on the model?

Draw (center) lines over the wall in an elevation window that represent the control joint pattern. Select them, and start up TrussMaker to create a matching solid with the proper dimensions for the joints (if a square notch rather than a v-notch is OK). The "truss" will be created at the location of the elevation line ... so you'll have to drag it into the wall and then use SEO to subtract the resulting 'truss' from the wall. (Of course, you will not see the result until you turn off the layer containing the 'truss'. I use a layer called 'Hidden cutting objects' for all such things.)

Voila.

"proper' way is to place a niche window (or copy the object and call it a control joint) and place this in the wall, make it 10mm wide 10mm deep and the hight of the wall. The it shows on all views

Quite so!

Make sure you do change the subtype when saving it as a control joint object ... you don't really want 5000 windows more in the schedule, do you?

I'm not at the PC with ArchiCad, so I can't experiment. How do you chage the subtype?

Open the object throught the File/GDL objects/ Open Object
Find your new object (don't change the existing window)
At the top center of the dialogue it show the current subtype
Click on Select sub type and choose the type you want from the list
