Can you use the Quicktime Preferences (see attached image) to specify when Quicktime should be used? In my experience Quicktime is quite well-behaved. As you say, there may be a problem with a specific application you use, but I don't think Quicktime is to blame.

<T>Hi!

What is it in ArchiCad that makes system requirements that not support home editions of XP / Vista?

And second, are Quicktime really a needed thing to have? It's a kind of nightmare software, maybe it not that hard to have if you only use your computer for ArchiCad and other cad related things. But I have my computer for both CAD and Music-production and QT gives me alot of trouble.
Why not have a choice to select if you want too install it or not, and if not, greymarked the function in AC that need QT.</T>

It overrides some of my other software and some of these overrides I can't turn of without uninstalling Quicktime, I don't know why, could be bugs that don't have with QT to do.
And it always being installed in "msconfig -> autostart" and there I must turn it of after almost every new update.
And there I work before QT overrides our economic system so after everytime we had installed QT we had too reinstall the economic system, I think the problem there was on both the ES and QT.

It's hard too find laptop computers today that don't have Vista preinstalled. And ofcause you don't get any drivers on cd that support the hardware so installing Win XP are asking for trouble.

Not that fast... look at for example Dell - they first sold Vista only than they returned to XP - and You can select which OS to be installed.

Again when buying Vista make sure You buy at least Bussiness edition - so that You will be able to downagrade to XP.

Most Laptop vendors have the drivers on their web pages....so only thing lost is the "recovery CD/DVD" which can be home made using some partition imager program (eg. Norton Ghost)
But ok, it seams that Pro versions of XP / Vista isn't a req. only a recommendation?

But the thing about QT, why not an option where you can choose to install it or not? Even if it's not gives you any problem, I don't like to install more things on my computer that I'm really needed. More things = slower computer and more things that could go wrong.
What I know the only thing in ArchiCad that req. QT-processing is sun-study, fly-through and VR views? But does it really need QT-player for creating this? I'm not that familiar with how QT works.
So, my question are, why do we need QT?

the reason the system requirements state XP Professional is that that is the version of Windows that ArchiCAD is coded and testesd on. A lot of people are using ArchiCAD fine on XP Home, but GS can't recommend it because they don't test it themselves.
As for Quicktime, it is required by ArchiCAD to function properly, so I think it is entirely reasonable to install it as part of the AC install procedure. So long as you set preferences right it should do exactly what you want it to. What other application is it stealing associations from anyway?
