Hello Eduardo,
Thank you for checking this out and posting back.
I did try, with the magic wand set to straight segments,
and selecting the contour by node but with the same outcome.
So, apparently somewhere between AC 10 and AC 12 this
tracing error has been fixed.
Thanks,

<T>Hello,
Recently, I discovered that using the magic wand with the
polyline tool active to trace a mesh contour does not work.
A polyline shows up somewhere on the mesh but does not
trace the selected contour. I believe this worked correctly
in versions previous to AC 10. Would anyone care to test
whether this has been fixed in AC 11 or AC 12.
Thank you,
Peter Devlin</T>

Working fine for me on 12, verify that you are over a "node". For Splines choose the "handles" geometry method.
