When you place dimensions in core only mode, you will not be able to see the dimensions in the other modes.

If entire structure mode is going to be plotted, you should place dimensions in entire structure mode. Then in the Dimension Properties under Dimension Details, choose "Dimension only the Core of Composite and Complex Walls".

<T>i m having a tough time zooming in/out to ensure that i am dim. to the correct point. is there a global setting or something that will restrict the dim lines to only ref framing/stud walls and not the finish face?

thanks in advance again.</T>

In Quick Options Toolbar set "Partial Structure Display" to "Core Only"
and then add Dimensions.

Make sure in your composite wall definition only the studs or structure(that you wish to dimension) is marked core only.
When placing dimensions, open the tool first and check the core only option. That way you can be sure you are not dimensioning linings as well as structure! Note you must do this first- you cannot retroactively toggle core/ whole wall.
