I don't get the marching ants until I click the 2nd corner of the marquee. Can't remember it ever being different. (Left-Click, release, then 2nd click, not left-click and drag.) You can hit Escape mid-marquee to cancel it.
I have had occurrences where selection highlighting and the drag "ribbon" disappears, and just close and restart Archicad and it all comes back. Never had to do a "new and reset all"

<R>I cannot get the marquee tool to actually select a marquee. I am attaching a screen shot of what I see now as I try to select a marquee area.

Minutes before this the tool would appear after I selected the area, but not with usual trailing line defining the marquee as I selected area.

That what appears when you right-click after starting the marquee. Any chance this is what is happening?

(I don't quite follow your initial message - can you explain further?)
I cannot get the marquee tool to respond at all.

I start with a left click to draw (drag) marquee, but the "crawling ants" marquee does not appear. Then if I right click to escape with "remove marquee" pop-up, the screen image I posted appears. It is like there is no marquee tool in the program. Other tools including the arrow work OK. When I select marquee tool I can only create a black line outline that disappears when I release mouse click.

The only escape I've found is a total reset to default:
save as + option+command

It is very time consuming to reset my favorites, shortcuts, etc. after the reset.

It is a very weird glitch AND I do not know what triggers it.
Thanks for your insight.

It is not as if I do not know how to use the marquee tool; I use it all the time. But sometimes the program acts "weird", as if I'd accidentally clipped a keystroke and then the marquee does this disappearing act. Since it periodically reoccurs, I am wondering if anyone else has had similar weirdness [read GLITCH] in their ArchiCAD 10 (or whatever version), or if there is a keystroke I need to avoid!

Also my computer could be culprit... see attached screen image of pixel shatter/breakup in ArchiCAD.

Is it just the marquee? Does it affect your selection window, and ability to snap on selection points?

We have this difficulty occasionally, and find it often resolves if you open a layout, then go back to the model.
slightly off topic: do you mean the 'rubber band' that follows the cursor?
if yes, you don't need to restart, just go to your 3d window and come back to the plan, that sorts it out.

Thanks, xristina. You're absolutely correct. I was aware of this too, just slipped my mind. Hasn't happened for a while.

And sorry, jrh323. Wasn't implying you don't know what you're doing. I just couldn't see from your description what you were doing that was causing a "problem".
