topic Re: Archicad 14 New Features in Modeling

We are a small architecture company working in Italy. We have mac computers, so to have a BIM software, we have to use AC.

I have to say, I like the software (I have about 10 years experience with Autocad and I'd never go back), but I cannot accept that GS doesn't address the serious problems that this program has:

Do we want to talk about the Stairmaker??? Really, Graphisoft??? Do you call it a professional tool? Do you expect people to work with it???

Now, before trying to export the BIM model to any consultant software on the planet, WHY DONT YOU FIX THE OLD RIDICULOUS PROBLEMS OF ARCHICAD?

...in other words: why does anyone from GS read this forum? Maybe not the CEO. Maybe just the GS mailman. He could read this, and in the morning, taking the mail to the CEO, he could say funny...

Just try and imagine them:

- "Mr Jack", CEO of Graphisoft, 45 years old, from somewhere around the world, somewhere more expensive than you think. Tall, handsome guy. Elegant. Black five degrees at Harvard, could not get the sixth one because of a witty joke he made about the Dean. Loves dogs too.

- "Joe", GS mailman. 64 years old, from Budapest. Job: picks up the mail, takes it to your desk. The mailman. He also happens to read this forum, from time to time.

I'd expect them to be something like:

---- IMAGINARY CONVERSATION BETWEEN GS CEO AND HIS MAILMAN: ----

Mailman Joe: "good morning Mr Jack"

Mr Jack "hey, Joe, it was about time ! Anything good in the news?"

Mailman Joe "not much Mr Jack. They're trying to drop some concrete to stuff up that damn oil leak down in the Mexican gulf"

Mr Jack "Ah, those silly ones! They really cannot do their jobs! What idiots they must be..."

Mailman Joe " Well I guess you're right, Mr Jack: they say, they tried to stop that leak for the last month or so"

Mr Jack " you're right, Joe. They had no clue how to stop that! They were even taking suggestions about what to do from some random people on the internet!"

Mailman Joe "And were they right?"

Mr Jack "who was right?"

Mailman Joe "I mean, the people on the internet?"

Mr Jack "Oh, Joe, Joe... You know you cannot take suggestion from people from the internet! How silly would that be? Can You imagine? Can you imagine if we at Graphisoft had an email address or something like that, and anyone could write to us all the time?"

Mailman Joe "Well, I don't know"

Mr Jack "Can you imagine that? Who would write to us? You, Joe? Would you write to us?"

Mailman Joe "I don't know, Mr Jack"

Mr Jack "Come on, Joe. Just imagine: what use would that be? What would you write to us? That the pizza guy is at the door? That the weather in Budapest sucks?"

Mailman Joe "I guess not. I would not write that"

Mr Jack "Then what would you write us? What could someone write to GS? We don't do love matchings or other housewife stuff"

Mailman Joe "I know you don't, Mr Jack"

Mr Jack "Do you even know what we do here at Graphisoft, Joe"

Mailman Joe "Yes I do know what you do here at GS, Mr Jack"

Mr Jack "And what do we do, Joe?"

Mailman Joe " Ehm, maybe you're right, Mr Jack, maybe I don't know what you do here at GS... But I know your Stairmaker sucks!"

Mr Jack "EXCUSE ME, JOE???"

Mailman Joe "I don't know. I'm sorry, Mr Jack, I didn't mean to say that. It's just..."

Mr Jack "It's just what, Joe?? Speak!"

Mailman Joe "It's just... I don't know... All those posts! All those people speaking about it. For years now... And a lot of bad words with it too, Mr Jack!"

Mr Jack "What are you talking about?"

Mailman Joe "Well, you know, on the forum. And it's been like that since years! Since I started to read it. I mean, they say a lot of things in that forum of yours, but the Stairmaker one I remember, I'm sure!"

Mr Jack "A forum? What forum?"

Mailman Joe "But Mr Jack... YOUR GRAPHISOFT FORUM"

Mr Jack "...a Graphisoft Forum???"

Mailman Joe "Yes! And they talk about the stuff that you do. They use it every day, you know? Some of them have been using it since the very beginning. Since the time when the GS CEO was Mr Pong, who passed away... Poor guy that Mr Pong..."

Mr Jack "He didn't pass away. Anyway, what do these people say???"

Mailman Joe "A lot of things, Mr Jack, a LOT of things. Even about you and GS..."

Mr Jack "How can they? They don't know me!"

Mailman Joe "They know you and GS, Mr Jack. It's you and GS: you just have no idea who they are!"

Mr Jack "But what do they say??? What do they think of our next new release? What about AC14???"

Mailman Joe "well, Mr Jack, I don't know what to say... They've been talking about it since some of your guy around here published some videos on youtube... They were not very happy with that. And now you published the official presentation movies on your website, and there's a lot of people pissed off about it!"

Mr Jack "What?? Why?"

Mailman Joe "Well, you know, it's just people on the internet... What do they know, after all! They just use your thing, AC or whatever it is, they use it every day. Since years"

Mr Jack "They've been using it since years! they must love it!"

Mailman Joe "I can say, most of them like it. But you never fix the old problems, Mr Jack! Do you know how many times I heard that your Stairmaker sucks?"

Mr Jack "Oh what do you know! What do they say about AC14???"

Mailman Joe "Well, a lot of them say it's useless, Mr Jack"

Mr Jack "What??? We dedicated the last 9 months of our work to it!"

Mailman Joe "But why did you not fix the Stairmaker problem? Do you know how many people have to use it every day? Why did you have to do all that mess about MEP, HVAC, WHAT T FKK, all those acronims! Do people really use all that? Don't you know that small design companies exchange data with small engineering practices, and small engineering practices only use Autocad in 2D???"

Mr Jack "since when do you talk like that, Joe???"

Mailman Joe "Since I've been reading you mail, Mr Jack. Don't you know that the world was designed in Autocad 2D, and most consultants still use it?? Do you think you're going to make small companies happy, with this AC14 release?? And what are you waiting for to release a 64bit version for Mac? Is this just one more trick to force people into updating to AC15 in 6 months time? Will the Stairmaker be fixed by then? Will you have issued a calculate menu for the 21st century to replace this one, that works with Roman numbers??? What about the Mac user interface??"

Mr Jack "People aren't forced to use macs. If they want to use macs, they have to accept little issues"

Mailman Joe "Maybe so, Mr Jack, but you also have to accept that as soon as another BIM software is issued for mac, you'll lose a lot of users. You're going down, Mr Jack!"

Mr Jack "How do you dare, mailman!"

Mailman Joe "Oh, shut up! You're going down and you know it! If you were interested in improving AC, you'd be reading your own forum! Instead, you play all IFC-friendly, god knows what that means! You think you're better than me because I'm a simple mailman. Let me tell you, Mr Jack: how many engineers do you need to fix that Stairmaker? How many years of knowledge, resources, investment are you putting into solving this ridiculous problem?

Mr Jack "You're fired, Joe, get the hell out of here!"

Mailman Joe "Oh, I'm going, Mr Jack: I'll leave you right here with your rotting company going down the drain. I know I'll find you still here in ten years, maybe with some minor features in yor ArchiCAD 24, like "customizable cursor shape" or a "complete GDL gallery of 3D vegetable garden plants" and other brilliant ideas like that, but with the same old software, the ancient problems, and with the same old feces version of Stairmaker that won't allow people to put two steps together!!!
- shadows in opengl
- Direct Dwg import

PS: Two features are still missing ..as for AC12 there were 12 'new' features & 13 for AC13 ...

I can't believe more than a third of the new features videos are showing how good Revit is. This is a big let down to say the least.

Only useful feature for me is prefix and suffix of dimensions. Wow what a great new innovative feature....Geez.

¿no mention to 64 bits for mac?
This new features don't make me happy, only two of them looks useful for my work.
Not surprising, and as usual leaves one feeling underwhelmed. It will be interesting to watch this forum's reaction to these videos....especially those who have been questioning their subscriptions....

A nice fix for TW2 users is the 'pack & go' feature that makes the whole deal a lot more viable.

<S></S>Sad that there seems to be no "foundation level" fix that gives hope for the future....<E></E>

Re: Archicad 14 New Features

Those videos look pretty official.

And if they are as complete as they seem to be (meaning that we should not expect any more or other major new features outside what is shown), then...

...I really don't know whether to cry or to laugh.

And not even remotely in a good way.

Of those supposed 'new' features, 3 are an extension (not improvement or upgrade) of an existing feature (TW2.0 - which, I guess wasn't completed when they released it in AC13 - surprise surprise), 3 are merely new ways to facilitate a user's ability to continue working and refining their models in other non-GS software, especially for tasks that AC still can't handle ( I still can NOT believe that a GS video is actually giving Revit products (MEP and Structure) free advertising, while advertising the fact that GS's own solutions (or lack thereof) for these respective functions are completely lacking.
The remaining new features are merely marginal improvements to existing features (dimension texts???? smart schedules?? door window libraries?????) which cumulatively beg the question, as to why these features have never been improved in the program prior to this release.

The only hope ( and thin it is) for anyone still wondering whether or not this will be a worthwhile upgrade, is that those videos are not definitive and complete and that there are maybe one or 2 other really major features still being kept under wraps for release date. But it is a thin hope indeed, because chances are that that's all there's going to be for AC14.

It's almost like they're literally trying to will people and push them away from buying or using future versions of ArchiCAD (and right into the arms of Revit, what with all that free advertising they gave them on an AC14 promotional video).

Unbelievable.

AC13 and now 14 have focused on collaboration, and as these videos show AC14 is particularly focused on improving collaboration with consultants - i.e Revit Structure/MEP.

They had to do this ... their future depends on it.

Revit is a tidal wave threatening to decimate ArchiCAD - not because Revit Architecture is better (it is not .. yet) but because when you are fighting to work with a consultant team who are on Revit Structure/MEP/.. then it is very tempting to make your life easier and switch to a closer platform. Then throw in a contractor using Revit and the sole team member not on the same platform as everyone else comes under enormous pressure to demonstrate that their software is not causing problems for everyone else.

So Graphisoft are quite rightly heavily focused at the moment on making sure ArchiCAD can work the best it can with Revit. At least it shows they are not sticking their head in the sand on this one. Now if only their marketing team can make sure people hear about the effectiveness of these collaboration tools.

If they do not do this then ArchiCAD will not be around for much longer, so all those fancy new tools we want/need will be pointless.

I can understand many people will see absolutely nothing for them in AC14, but these things are critical for larger customers. As we have seen in recent posts - and from personal experiences for many of us - there are big ArchiCAD users seriously considering moving to Revit because of collaboration issues.

That is the real threat to ArchiCAD's future ... not a better stair tool (as much as I want it).

It still seems like bad marketing for sure. If you have to go to so much trouble to convert files to Revit MEP and structure - and if you are a big company, the first question that pops up would be Why not just use Revit Architecture??? If Revit releases a service pack - how long does it take for GS to release a compatible exporter? Do you have to wait till next year? Will GS guarantee 100% compatiblity and error free translation? If I am an architect working on a huge project with consultants using Revit MEP and Structure, do I really want this added liability to deal with?

BTW, the brief videos showcasing Revit MEP and Structure look like a snap! Wonder how good Revit Arch is...

As we have seen in recent posts - and from personal experiences for many of us - there are big ArchiCAD users seriously considering moving to Revit because of collaboration issues.

That is the real threat to ArchiCAD's future ... not a better stair tool (as much as I want it).

So if they're not going to improve or enhance the core tool-set of AC (core tools, not "fancy", as you put it), at the expense of improving collaborative capabilities with their rival software's complementary tools, then why, pray tell, should an ArchiCAD user bother spending more money on them when those tools are not only available in their rival's software ( which have no collaboration issues), but are also superior in many cases, and are perpetually improving with each release.

If GS are not going to bother giving their customers a more intuitive way of making parametric doors and windows, for example (nothing fancy about that), without having to write hundreds of lines of GDL code, because they (GS) have to make sure that users will be able to export their models to Revit Structure or Revit MEP, why not just switch to Revit Architecture which already has a (more or less,) intuitive and graphical parametric object maker, already?

You argument is basically this, in a nutshell,<S></S> "I know, as a manufacturer, I provide an inferior car, or product, but rather than improving it, I think it's better to ensure that my customers are able to get their cars to my rival's garage to get it fixed or to buy missing parts and get better service, that they can't get from me, but which they really should by all rights be expecting from my shop, out of the box." <E></E>.

In most other cases in the business world, that would be considered a ludicrous business model, and just plain crazy.

I dare say, that GS wouldn't find themselves in this position of having to 'fight for their survival' had they been actually listening (and responding) to their day-to-day users, for the last 4 or 5 versions. Their biggest marketing asset has always been the users who not only recommend the product to other prospective buyers and colleagues but also through their works and designs. Not the re-sellers, and certainly not the marketing department at GSHQ. The users.

Instead they have spent the better part of the last couple of versions demonstrating exactly why investing in this software or hoping for better improvements are a bad baaaad investment, and ushering legions of users to Autodesk faster that Autodesk's own marketing department can.

I understand the point you're trying to make, and in better circumstances, I would probably also be trying to defend GS's decisions here as well. But given what has been their apparent tone-deaf approach to dealing with their (small) customers, who, at this point are nothing better than reliable cash-cows for them, it all just seems rather unpalatable.

I have to agree with your post, Clarence.
May I also speculate that single users who were disenfranchised with 13 and the lack on extra features (for them) will feel totally jilted this time round.

Owen I think the problem for GS is that they need to be doing "both/and" not just "either/or"...if you get my drift. <S></S>AC is so seriously behind in so many areas they cannot afford to just look at interoperability...<E></E>

I hadn't even thought of updates, and compatibility issues.

And let's not forget how GS has enough issues with third party plugins in their own house, keeping up to date and compatible with each AC release, and on both sides of the Mac/PC divide. Or the fact that Autodesk has never exhibited great enthusiasm for the IFC format, and wouldn't feel compelled to keep up with the latest protocols if they felt it might hurt their bottom-line or their strategy of drawing more users into the DWG/DXF/RVT fold.
I think your right. I get that for the long haul goal,
even if 14 has nothing for me.

If nothing else significant is in 14, but what appears to be an authentic leak, then micro small guys like me are paying for the very survival of GS's
immediate future.
I'm one of the sheep that is on subscription so I'll give them till 15 to reconnect with the caboose, then I'll cut loose.
