Thanks David, I'm familiar with the roof edge restriction/rule.

I'm trying to align the usual way, and not just with roofs. Some walls & slabs are mis-behaving as well...

<T>I have a problem aligning a vector hatch.

In the 3D window, with the wall/roof/slab (etc..) selected, I select
Design>Align 3D Texture>Set Direction

but when I click on the surface I need to change the direction for, ArchiCAD just reverts back to the pointer - effectively cancelling the action - instead of giving the usual dialogue allowing numeric/manual input.

Is there a method / setting / state that i'm missing?

I've tried on several different types to see if it's anything to do with that, to no avail.
I selected another wall, and am miraculously able to set direction, but still not allowed to do so on the actual walls / roof I want to edit!!!

AAAARRGGGGHH!! very frustrating!!</T>

Are you trying to change the direction of the texture on the roof's edge, by any chance?
That would throw you out of the sub-routine, as you describe.

On slabs and roofs, the "align 3d texture" command only affects the top and bottom surfaces, so you need to select the object and then click on either the top of the bottom. (Okay, it actually affects the whole object, but the vertical orientation of the sides keeps the texture vertical. You'll see the texture on the sides will shift if you change the top surface of the object, but keeps its original direction)

Cheap trick: maybe duplicate a new fill just for the roof sides and give it the orientation you want in the main fills menu?
