I suppose that whether or not one has a problem with GDL modeling, really depends, in large part, on their familiarity and fluency in GDL scripting in the first place. Which is where the crux of the problem lies for me;

Bricklyne, your not even close to being alone in your thought despite what the handful of GDL evangelists will try to persuade you to believe.

Bricklyne wrote:
An analogous scenario, would be like Rolls-Royce requiring their clientele to have to learn the intricacies of automative fluid injection adn dynamics details, just to be able to deal with an everyday oil transmission flaw in the engine of their car. ( Yes, I do consider ArchiCAD to be the Rolls-Royce of the Virtual Building field, , despite it's shortcomings, and yes, I do consider the omission of these basic modeling methodologies, such as extrusion along curved paths, to be serious enough flaws if not shortcomings in the program's engine, particularly in this 21st Century, just as an oil transmission defect is in a car engine).

Excellent analogy!!!!!!!, but it will probably be falling on deaf ears.

Bricklyne wrote:
How long should we wait for the modeling tools upgrade?

Until Revit or some new kid on the block, like Sketchup hands GS there lunch.

Bricklyne wrote:
Of course therere are always work-arounds ( as I gave my own example of the double curving roof in a previous posting) which is one of the great things about ArchiCAD; it's flexibility. But they rarely ever are, 'easily done', as you describe them. ( the Mesh-tool solution in the aforementioned example took up to 10-15 times longer than profiler would have taken had it been working well; and it wasn't even that accurate, when all was said and done)

You actually would prefer to use your time more productively, what are you thinking?

Bricklyne wrote:
The aversion I was referring to was more so towards stagnation, than it is to change, as you imply. In my personal opinion, there is nothing progressive about GDL scripting, or at least the methodology of it, as a means of creating and modifying 3D models and objects. Sure, it's almost limitless and is quite powerful in the hands of an expert user; as is C++, or Fortran, or COBOL, Turbo Pascal (.... get my drift? )

Bricklyne, the GDL evangelists will never "get your drift" on this issue. What nerve you have expecting to spend your time creatively designing, presenting, and documenting your architectural projects. How dare you expect to be a "good architect" without being a GDL technician. Don't you know that I.M. Pei, Frank Gehry, Richard Meyer, Norman Foster are all GDL experts? Buck up and learn the montra, I MUST LEARN GDL!!!!!

Bricklyne wrote:
But in light of the fact that most ArchiCAD users are trained primarily to draw, design and create first and foremostly through graphic visualization as opposed to, say, verbal Coding; wouldn't it make more sense to devise a means with which they can overcome this creatvity barrier in the Virtual Building universe, and which is congenitally attuned to their naturally honed technical and perceptive skills.

Again with the logic, this one is SMART!

Bricklyne wrote:
(sorry for going on too long. but I reallly feel quite strongly about this!)

Brycklyne, very well stated. But if you read enough of these posts, will find that some ( though not all ) who will respond as apologists for GS on this forum will try to coerce into believing that expecting the most advanced and forward thinking software, especially given the cost of the software, from GS is YOUR problem. Your points about deficiencies in the modeling capabilities in AC are well reasoned.

It is amazing to me that we still cannot extrude along a path, or lathe a shape, or rotate in 3d without learning GDL or buying many additional tools just to name a couple of modeling shortcomings.

In my opinion, 9.0 should be called 8.5. Some perfume and lipstick was added. Yes you should enjoy some efficiencies with this version. Not sure how some have quantified this as 20%, not yet anyway.

But we still don't see any terrain modeling improvements ( oh, I'm sorry, I keep forgetting the earth is flat, just ask Christopher Columbus, he works at GS ), stairmaker......well we all know what a piece of garbage that is, and adding Lightworks while a good step forward was only a half step. Buy making it part of AC, instead of a free standing package like Artlantis is, ( oh, and what a good idea it was not to add in radiosity since, the apologists have determined for us that we don't REALLY need it, I allways love looking at their renderings ) it forces you to put AC away while a rendering task is being performed.

One of the benefits of Artlantis being a stand alone package is the rendering can process in the background while you continue to work on an AC project in the forground.....uhm, hello GS!!!

OK, sit back and enjoy the comebacks, should be fun. Keep up the heat, its the only way to burn away the chaff!

We are happy to announce on ArchiCAD-Talk that ArchiCAD 9 will be released in September 2004. Shipment will start with the INT, US and GER versions followed by other localized language versions over the coming months. Based on the results of extensive beta testing we are confident that this version will be the most robust version of ArchiCAD ever. Please check www.graphisoft.com for the official press release on ArchiCAD 9! And... enjoy!
I have just looked through the AC9 demos on AC's web site.

In one word: Impressive!

It's obvious that this time, they've made user experience the first priority. (Dragged copy remains selected, dockable palettes, savable user environments ["profiles"], Lightworks, better PDF integration, etc etc).

Take a look!
My impression is quite different: there are many new productivity features. Perhaps some are subtle, but they add up to a must-have upgrade IMHO, even without the new LightWorks rendering engine. LightWorks is like icing on the cake! <E>😉</E>
Yes, many wishes are still not granted, so we may have to wish louder. <E>😉</E>

As for the rest, IMO, it should've been named 8.5 not 9... BUT, the optimization for OS X is very welcome!

I see your point of view but if you take a look to the wish list and polls here only 1-2 made it here. Most of the new features may help in increased productivity but i cannot expect a new version with mostly productivity improvements.
The only important working feature i see it the text tool. Ok for the docable palletes and the user profiles but if you would have to choose wouldnt you choose the text tool?

I hope the feature list is longer. I was hoping for much more after 2 years

I think its more, if we put in this wish in here what will happen over there.

We all have our wishes and hopes for the coming versions of ArchiCAD but we can't forget that they have to be implemented into the existing code. What I'm basically trying to say is easier said than done, well in this case easier whished than made true.

I, like Karl, belive that there is enough new content/features to warrant a full version upgrade. Just take a look at the new work environment, coverfills and not to forget the seamless DWG intergration, just to name a few.

My 2cents.
I totally agree with this statement! The number should've been 8.5...
It would've been 8.2 if it weren't for the new dockable palettes and user profiles.
Why would Graphisoft fix up stairmaker when we now have Archistair from Cigraph?

It's free too

Cheers.
Ben

Ben archistair is third party and archiwall and and. Stairs are NOT chairs and tables to be provided by third party.

We were asking for differect section-plan fills for walls (to say smthf basic) and was ignored as almost ALL of other wishes of all users.
To inform you docable pallets are 5 minutes of work if you have ever made code with delphi or visual c++ and we could live without it.

If you boys say its ok... then we could have NO of our wishes implemented.
The reason i left autocad behind is they thought we were fools. From version autocad 2000 to 2005 we have features that we ought to see in 1 version skip.

I could shut up if it was 8.3 or 8.5.. but 9???
PLease make a list of all our polls (or the most visitied ones) and see.
If OUR opinion does not matter then we should be told so.

I was really hoping for some features of the many asked here and we get only 2 for design (text and hatch).

I am waiting for Djorgie's opinion

oreopoulos.
I hear what you are saying, I think that you will find that most, if not all of the new features are indeed wishes.
I belive, from a reliable source, that Graphisoft has a wish list with some 5000 wishes and growing every day.

I agree that maybe some important issues may have been over looked but as I stated earlier there are enough new and fantastic features to warrant the name ArchiCAD 9.

Cheers.
If they granted all 5000 wishes what would they put in ArchiCAD 10?

Probably 4500 bug fixes!
