Thanks Link - I tried that; however, the roof plan is still not accurate. I guess I need to trim the roofs at their intersection points to get an accurate 2D roof plan. I've tried to get the roof edge trim pet pallette to pop up to no avail. Is there a way to trim roofs? Thanks

<T>Hello,

Is there a way to generate a 2D vector line roof plan in Archicad? I used the top view axonometric window which is exactly what I wanted - but it's a bitmap. The reason for doing this is to import the drawing into Autocad. Thanks in advance for your help.</T>

Dwight and Link,

I solved the problem by using the top view axon with hidden line function enabled so I could see where the roofs intersected- I then added hotspots to edit the roof forms. You both probably already knew this - my firm is autocad only and I pick things up any way I can. I tried to make a PDF to show you but it didn't work. Thanks for your help.

You need to learn how to join roofs properly. Try selecting one roof and then ctrl clicking the <S></S>edge<E></E> of the other roof and it will extend or reduce to meet the plane of the selected roof. Then you need to repeat the process with the other roof. You can do all of this in the 3D window too, which is often easier to see what you're doing.

I'm sure it's detailed in the reference guide too. Surely...
Using the Internal rendering engine in Hidden Line mode, just surround the view with you want with the marque tool ( last marque option on the right) Copy, and Paste it into your AutoCAD. Or you could paste it into your ArchiCAD floor plan and Drag-n-drop it into AutoCAD later when you have it finished.

What's all this talk about saving the view from the 3D model? That's the WORST advice! Unless there are major SEOing, this is clearly not the best route to take.

It's simply a matter of modeling it correctly and saving a DWG from the roof plan!
SEOs won't show correctly in ArchiCAD's plan window, let alone in AutoCAD!
I was simply offering an alternative solution that had not been suggested yet.

It is fast, simple, and a very useful tool for a new user to know about.

Creating a seperate file of any type and configuring it for import to AutoCAD is not nearly as fast as Copy and Paste, or Drag-n-Drop,
and you don't need to know anything at all about how to set up the .dwg translator.

There are several advantaged to using the Copy method.

One of which is that it will open up the 3D Copy Options window so you can control what you want to see, how you want to show it, and get rid of the redundant lines before you add it to the AutoCAD drawing.

<S></S>How is creating another seperate file for import better or more useful than to just drag-n-drop it, or Paste it into AutoCAD?<E></E>

There may be any number of reasons why he wanted to use the lines showing up in his 3D view of the roof rather than the lines showing up in his roof plan.

Also, perhaps he didn't want to take the time to tweak his roof plan to look as he wants it to show up in AutoCAD.

Orthodoxy with ArchiCAD modeling is seldom implemented to its fullest potential because in reality, it is seldom useful or necessary.

Perhaps the new user has already discovered this and was looking for a short cut.

There is never only one way to skin a cat. Especially with ArchiCAD.

Thank you Link, Dwight, Aussie, and Steve - I realize everyone is busy and I really appreciate your input. Link was correct in that I needed to connect roof planes properly to begin with - I was trying to ctrl-click without adding another hotspot - lo and behold there was the key on page 191. Thanks again for all of your collective help - take care.
