<T>Hello,
I'm hoping someone might have a good solution for this; I have a client who wants rope moldings accents on a lot of cabinetry, up until now I have been modifying the spiral object in the special conts. folder to create the look but the more I add to this the longer all my processing goes so this is not a good full model solution. I have cadimage’s Profiler tool and we picked up Objective this weekend to maybe model a more efficient way to create this both in my time and in processing time. Thanks</T>

Can you post a picture of what you are trying to achieve?...

Also... it would help us help you if you create a signature in your profile with your OS, AC version and hardware specs.

That picture accurate for one part, the rope in the crown moulding on the cabinets, the other part is the client is having custom cabinets milled with a 1" wide rope framing the raised panel on the doors. I will upload a quick pick of that shortly.

Ok Woodz... I got it...

If you want it all modeled in 3d... you can do it... But as Djordje said... Prepare for a polygon nightmare.

If I were in this situation... I'd create a complex profile with 2 fills...

One for the plain wood, and another semi circular to which I would apply another material with a rope texture...

This would make your life a hell lot easy with the 3d renderings...
You can easily model this with OBJECTiVE (see attached image). You can also easily control the facetting of profiles created with OBJECTiVE - they all have a setting specifically for this purpose. You can make the objects very smooth for close-up renders, or a bit chunkier (and with far fewer polygons) for everything else. Let me know if you'd like more detailed instructions (or an example).

Yes. Very nice Ralph.

I have made this rope trim the hard way too.
You can make a 1/2 ring with the profiler, view it from the top, save it as a library part, rotate it to 45 deg., and then multiply it close together so it looks like a rope. Not a good option unless your desperate.

Indeed Objective is a very handy tool for that tuff jobs... No doubt...

But in this situation... a "simple" complex profile ( ) and a SEO´ed "Spiral 12" object could easily do the job too...

Again... Prepare for a nightmare polygon...

Refer to the attached image:

1) Select the <S></S>Regular Profile<E></E> object bundled with OBJECTiVE, and apply the settings as shown to make it a vertical spiral with a round profile. Note that you can control the smoothness (and number of faces in 3D) using these settings.
2) Use multiply to repeat this single instance over the required length
3) You should have something like this
4) If you want to trim off the top/base of the 'rope', place an elevation alongside it and use OBJECTiVE's <S></S>Split<E></E> tool to cut them off
5) You should finish up with something like this.

You can change the smoothness at any time to control the complexity of the 3D model. The model should be quite practical if the smoothness is set appropriately.

Wow, now I just need to learn it all, someday.
Thanks everyone, this thread has inspired me to try even harder!
Hi Lec,

See this thread on the MJO and its distribution here:
<LINK_TEXT text="http://archicad-talk.graphisoft.com/vie ... p?p=141436">http://archicad-talk.graphisoft.com/viewtopic.php?p=141436</LINK_TEXT>

In a nutshell, GS-UK commissioned Ralph Wessel to create this object and then decided to distribute it to their <S></S>subscribers<E></E>. Subsequently, it was given to other distributors worldwide to do the same. Many are/were unaware about its very existence and had to be pushed to contact GS-UK. Mine sent me a CD in the mail within a few days. Your mileage may vary - apparently others have not been as lucky.
