I have been looking into file size and the use of Update Type within Drawings placed on layouts. I unchecked the "Store Drawing in the Project File" option and the file size reduced from 34 MB to 17 MB. I also tried the Manual update option for the placed 3D views (with the Manual update selected the changed the "Store Drawing in the Project File" becomes greyed-out and defaults to checked).

Upon changing the placed drawings options back to Auto and checking the "Store Drawing in the Project File" box, the views are now missing the openings.
