Well... in this case AIA has to be more proactive. Making public statements encouraging its members to take an active role in adopting it, is not enough.
I'm pretty sure all AIA members pay their annual membership expecting to receive more than this.
For example: They could make some lobby for that in washington. I guess this is the best timing to achieve this... and perhaps Europe will follow.

<R>Hi guys,
I think this is great news:
The American Institute of Architects has issued a statement endorsing open standards and encouraging its members to take an active role in adopting it:

Here is an excerpt:

The AIA believes that all industry-supporting software must facilitate, not inhibit, project planning, design, construction, commissioning and lifecycle management.
This software must support non-proprietary open standards for auditable information exchange and allow for confident information exchanges across applications and across time.
This is best accomplished through professional, public- and private sector adoption of open standards. The AIA encourages its members and other industry organizations to assume a leadership role in the ongoing development of open standards.

The full statement can be found here:
I personally don't like excessive government intervention...

But IMO this is an issue that US goverment must fix.

Thats why standards exists and has to be set by goverments.

Imagine if each and every US train maker had its own rail dimensions?...

My 2 cents.
