<R>Maybe this will save someone else the time I just wasted.

If/when your forced to resort to "custom text" instead of "measured value" for an associative dimension..... Change the text color in AC (to something like Red) ...so when you edit the model and the dimension doesn't change.... you'll know why. </R>

This is very important. I have been using this as a standard with my clients for years. It saves a lot of grief.

But wouldn't it be even better if you could have custom text and a stretchy dimension.

"<> room name" for example - where "<>" represents the dimension in the custom text string.

Come on Graphisoft, much, much cheaper CAD software has been doing this since the early 90's that I am aware of.
I assume you mean appending text to an associative dimension. This is another important wish (long standing I think). It is silly to have to make dimension text custom just to add "±" or "VIF".

I promise to push for these little tweaks to the old dimension tool along with my loud cries for a useful label tool in ArchiCAD 11.

No

But I am not too dismayed. The extent of the new features in 10 are still surprising to me even though I've been involved with it for almost a year and a half now. I guess I am just now getting out from the midst of the trees and beginning to see the forest again. I do think that it is a very impressive accomplishment, perhaps even "awe inspiring"
