Is a mesh the way to make a contour map? How?

I am a new user.
I've laid a regular sloped mesh over a contour site plan (a placed autocad dwg), then i was able to change the elevations of the points to approximate the lay of the land, but it was tedious and not to clean.

Is there an easy way to 'trace' the contour lines as mesh ridges, assigning them each their own elevation?

I cant' seem to find anyting on this in the Help files or the couple of books that I have.
