<T>Hi all, i've always had problems doing quick dims. Does anybody know the simplest way of using the tool from wall to wall

Thanks - I'm sure this is basic but id like to master it properly

Is there a proper tutorial ??

Thank you all
Hey Myles.

Are you looking for automatic dimensioning? The location of the menu command depends on your work environment profile. From memory, by default it is under Document> Document Extras> Automatic Dimensioning.

Be sure to select your walls first, then go to the menu and follow all the prompts carefully. Pretty easy really.

Cheers,
Forget the automatic dimension tool.
What could be easier than just using the dimension tool?

Select the tool.
Click on the walls you want dimensioned.
Double click when finished selecting.
Click to place dimension.

The auto dimension tool is OK for the external dimension but I still prefer to do them manually.
By the time you have checked and fixed up any problems and then added in dimensions for columns, deleted duplicates and then move the dimensions so you can add more for the internal walls you may just as well place them manually.
It's just as quick and you get exactly what you want where you want it.
screen dump the plan view with your "walls to be dimensioned" selected and also the result.

Another thought is maybe you have walls on top of walls in plan.
Can you turn off layers leaving on just the walls you want to dimension.

I find it is a good idea to turn off what you don't want to dimension so you don't have to spend time "Tabbing" to select what you want the dimension to associate to (when manually dimensioning).
Too much surfing in the last five years mate?

If you want to manually dimension the walls, then hide what you don't need, set the appropriate method in the settings or info box (linear dimensions would be a good place to start) and have at it.

Click on wall edges to get the thicknesses, or on their ends if you don't want the thicknesses. Never the midpoint. Keep an eye on your dimension points to make sure they're round (and associated), triple click to finish and hammer them down...

Coming back to you?...
I always dimension walls manually (hiding unwanted layers).
My method is to dimension first the distance between only two walls, and finish that dimension line (double click). Then, keeping cmd pressed, I add all the walls that I need to add. This way, if I don't hit a wall in the right place, I just ctrl+z and keep moving on. As a bonus, I see each dimension as it is being clicked on, which gives me a helpful feedback.

Another tip for manual dimensioning is to just dimension the extremes of the building, then select the dimension, right click, move, multiply, spread. This allows you to create lots of rows of the same dimension that are evenly spaced.

Then one by one select the dimensions lines and control + click on the geomoetries or corners of geometries you want to dimension. Very quick and its a way of having a little more peace of mind if you are not confident that auto dimensioning will do the job.

Hey Myles -

Is your ghost off when dimensioning? That can definitely screw up, [or enhance depending on your situation], your dimensions.

Somewhere between Barry 'n George here. Like Barry said the auto-dim tool is slick but it generates <S></S>SO<E></E> much extra info you spend nearly the same amount of time cleaning it all up.

I use George's method for a couple of reasons..........accuracy & control.

Final dimensioning is the sure fire way to check the model for accuracy. If the model's off, even by a 64th it "shows up" in dimensioning.

Dimensioning to your extremes, then multiplying it outward [holding the SHIFT key!], by the increment I want them to appear in docs. Assures all dimension strings are based on the same maximum distance and I get the appearance I want on the docs. [ For instance all dims to the same side of interior walls.] Then use individual strings for separate info, cntrl clicking and deleting/adjusting as I go. Too much info on any one dim string is more confusing than informative.

Link's sent me some pics of your water antics a while back........we windsurf here but not like you guys!
