What sort of projects do you do? Residential, commercial, large or small? Do you have typical consultants that you work with? Do you start with any existing conditions materials - photos, old cad or scanned plans, previous permit info, etc?

I do almost everything...here in mozambique you be specialized in one thing. You have to do everything that you can.

It depends how I start the projects...the project i'm working right now it was a old autocad file that i had to remodel it.

In general:

Main project folder that is empty, named as the project is.

PLN folder for your PLNs
Modules folder for the project specific modules
DWG In folder for any DWG input files
DWG Out folder for DWGs that you will create for sending to others
projectname lib folder for all the project specific library parts that you make, textures that you use, hopefully sorted in sub-folders
Images folder for any renderings
PDF folder for PDFs
etc ...

It pays to have the same basic structure for all the projects and to adhere to it. Also, inform everyone in the office what the structure means. Then everybody will be able to decipher anybody else's project.

In the moment i'm doing like this:

Root Folder of the project -> XXXXX Name of project (where XXXXX is year and number of project in that year ex. 200712 Name of project)

And the rest is same principle ->

XXXXX PDF Folder,
XXXXX ARCHICAD Folder
XXXXX IMAGE Folder
XXXXX AUTOCAD Folder
XXXXX SCANS Folder (sometimes I introduce this to the Image folder)
XXXXX LIBRARY

And my files are always connected to the code of the project XXXXX Name of file.PLN

What do you guys think? i'm in the right path? Just need to do a ZIP file with the default folder and a Readme file, right?

Below is a basic folder structure that was designed for beginners using ArchiCAD 9. It can still be easily tweaked for AC10 & 11, and was anyway designed to be tweaked to a particular company's workflow.

It even has instructions embedded in the CAD Management folder (unfortunately I had to take many images out to get it to a size where I could upload it to AC-Talk).

It takes due understanding, but maybe it will be of help to you...

Cheers,
Hello, can you send the complete zip file to my email? I would really appreciate it. It is what i was looking for.

But one think must be added the project number to every folder. Because when you want to find in future one PDF file on the X folder you just put XXXXX (project number) + PDF...and it goes directly to the exact folder.

Understand? Now I just need a software that changes the XXXXX in every to all subfolder to the folder template folder structure.

My email: morgado_ruben@yahoo.com

Thanks

Yes, all the words 'Project' are supposed to be replaced with the actual project number/name. When I was teachind ArchiCAD at a university in Utah once, a kid wrote a batch file in DOS right in front of me that changed all the Project folder numbers. It was fantastic and simple, but I've never been able to replicate it (not that I am much of a programmer).

Cheers,
