Next step. It seems I'm all set to go but when I double click on a .pln file and it opens up 10, then it asks me if I want to browse, or which recent file I want to open. Well I double clicked a specific file, I want that one to open of course. Is this for everyone or is it my special tweaked version of file assocaiation?

I can't seem to hook up .pln files to open with a double click in version 10. When I browse to "open with" I can go to the Archicad10.exe file but it doesn't hang on to it.
If I go to the individial file properties, same thing, I can go pick 10 but it doesn't come into the "recommended programs" list so that I can highlight it.
Any suggestions? I'm tired of opening the program and then opening the file, that's an extra step. Thanks.

Sounds like a registry problem. I haven't run into this myself so I'm not sure if there is a quick fix or if it takes a reinstall (nor whether that would do the trick). Does it work to drag and drop the file to an ArchiCAD shortcut or taskbar icon?

What does Windows try to open PLN files with, if not Archicad 10?

ArchiCAD 9 I bet.

2 ways I know of: Right click on the file > Open With > Choose Program... > (choose AC10) and check 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file'. Or in Windows Explorer go to Tools > Folder Options > File Types, scroll down to PLN (click in the list and hit the P key a few times) and hit the Change button. This just take you back to the first method though!

Hope there's not more to it than that!
anyway I approach it, through individual files, through folder tools, I can't make 10 stick as the preferred program to open it with. I can browse to it, but it won't bring it to the list of programs to pick.

I had the same problem with opening tiff files in Photoshop and I tracked down a rather obscure fix. It worked for me, so I will explain it here in the hopes it works for you. Be warned it's a bit of a crazy dance:

1. Go into My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>File Types;

2. Select your first file type (.pln) and click the "Change" button. Select a program - any program, from the list. Do this a few times until the "Restore" button in the Folder Options dialog finally changes into "Advanced." This can take up to 10 attempts! (Crazy! );

3. Once the Advanced button becomes available on the File Types tab, click it. Select "open" from the Actions box. and click the "Edit.." button;

4. Click the "Browse.." button and browse to your archicad.exe file. Double-click it and the "Application used to perform action" box should update with the path to archicad.exe. You may want to add " "%1" " to the end of that path, which basically means open file;

5. You can also change the icon, using the Change Icon... button. In the next dialog hit Browse... and browse to your archicad.exe file where you will be presented with a variety of icons. Select the appropriate icon and hit OK.

6. Click OK to go back to the "Edit File Type" window. Click OK again to return to the File Types tab. ArchiCAD 10 should now be listed as the program we use to open this file type, not in the list, but at the bottom of the dialog. Click 'Close';

If it doesn't work first time, then...

7. Right click on the file > Open With > Choose Program... > (choose AC10) and check 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file'.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,
