<T>My elevations have been transformed into something I've never seen before: an "independent" elevation.

No markers and no editable settings.

Can anyone tell me what might have happened here?</T>

My guess is that you deleted the markers either by selecting them, deleting thier layers or by editing using Attribute Manager.

last thing I recall doing was placing 1:100 views on layouts, cloning the elevations folder to make enlarged elevations and placing those.

I do not recall having done anything to marker settings, but perhaps I did.

I've made new elevations and am carrying on.

I'm remarking about this as I have never seen the term 'independent' applied to anything other than details and worksheets. My elevations were all live to the model and then became static line drawings with no associated markers.

Also, if you select an Elevation Line, go to its Settings Dialog and set its type from "Source Marker" to "Unlinked Marker" then its corresponding Elevation item in the Project Map will become an Independent Elevation.
You can then link that Marker to that independent Elevation but you can never again make it a Source Marker.
