<T>A couple of quick questions on setting up layouts for issue.

1- Is it better to place text on the view map or on the layout sheets themselves.
2- Is there an equivalent of Revit 'model lines' in ArchiCAD, or are all lines only annotation elements and only applicable to the view they are drawn on?</T>

1. It will depends on the type of information. Is it plain text or labels linked to elements/properties?
2. I think you can do this with Morph Lines. They appear in both 2d/3d.

1. For the moment, just plain text, until I get my head around labels linked to elements. Im still grappling with ArchiCAD having used Revit for many years. Id like to do this within the view, however I don't see any 'view parameter' edges, so im reluctant to place text on the view to find it has been cropped when I place that view on a layout.

2. Thank for this, ill try morph lines.
If I understand correctly, you are asking whether lines drawn in Views are View-specific or not.
In Archicad, lines (and other element types, too) are assigned Layers (sort of the equivalent of Revit Categories). When you save a View, it saves which Layers are visible and which ones are hidden. So if the Layer on which you draw the line is set to be visible in multiple Views, then that Line will be visible in all those Views. So in Archicad, there is no such concept of an element being View-specific.

There is one thing though: Partial Structure Display options. Dimensions placed in one Partial Structure Display option will be specific to that Partial Structure Display option, and will not be displayed when another Partial Structure Display option is activated.

I would never annotate on a layout.
If you do, you will be forever swapping between the view and the layout to make sure every thing is synchronised.
Annotate in the views.

If you are worried about the extents of your layout, you can always set your layout page as a trace reference.
Can this work backwards? i.e. if I set the view parameters in the layout, can I transfer this to the view itself so I can see the extent of the view?
The frame of the drawing on the layout is infinitely adjustable, or you can set it to "Fit frame to Drawing" in which case it will always surround what is in the drawing at all times.
The extent of the frame can not be seen in the view.

The extent of the frame does not limit what you can fit on the layout page.
The master layout and it margins determine what will fit on the page.
If the drawing frame extends past the layout page margins then it won't print beyond that margin.
That is why I suggested that you set the layout page as your trace reference in the view you are working on.

Ok, having spent many hours trying this out, im still perplexed by the way ArchiCAD handles text and layouts. Ive followed U-tube videos explain how to set up a view map, create a new view and then start adjusting this view ready for placing on a layout. Ive then followed your advice and 'traced' the layout onto the view to start placing tex, which seemed a good workflow. I (perhaps mistakingly) thought each view could be adapted using pens, filers, text, hatches etc independent of the other views. This is essentially how revit works, allowing you to 'graphically override' the model to suit the deliverable.

A few things are happening which is frustrating me, and im sure these have either simple explanations or my workflow is all wrong.

1. Ive set up both existing layout and proposed layouts and placed views onto these ready for text..

2. within the existing view, i've then placed text, and this appears on the layout.

3. This text however also appears on the proposed view, which has the filter set for 'proposed'

4. There also seems to be issued in 'tracing' these layouts onto the view. If I trace the proposed layout onto the proposed view, it looks fine, however when I go to the existing view, and swap this with the 'traced' existing layout, it appears in the wrong place.

Do I have to 'detach' each of these views to allow text, annotations etc to not infect other views.

If you are trying to show proposed and existing views in the same file it can be done with layers and layer combinations.
The 'proper' way however is to use the Renovation Filters.
There are 3 renovation status that can be applied to each element - including text.
Use the Renovation palette to change the status for elements that you will be placing next.

You can always change the status of any element after in the element settings (or info box).

In your Project Map you have 'view points' for all of the storey plans, section and elevations.
In the View Map you then create 'views' of these view points.
You can have multiple views of each view point, so you can have one for 'Proposed' work and one for 'Existing' work.
You have renovation filters (that you can customise) that will allow you to 'show', 'override' or 'hide' each status.
So you create filter that will show, override or hide each status as you require, and then you apply that renovation filter to the view in the view settings, so it will automatically be activated when you use that view.
Now all you have to do is place the views on the layouts.
All annotation is done in the view and not on the layout.

Check the HelpCenter for info on renovations.

There may also be videos in the youtube channel that you find a link to in your Archicad Help menu.
thanks Barry, I think for the meantime and to keep on programme im just going to use text on the layouts. Im sure it will all make sense eventually.

Just for the record, im having to deal with being made redundant, the Covid 19 lockdown, home schooling, no income, trying to kick start a new business. Ive been using Revit exclusively for 5 years and could easily step into a senior role in any practice using this. I have however decided to make things hard for myself and purchased ArchiCAD, which has some fantastic tools. Im already doing things I would have struggled with on Revit, however the whole workflow for deliverables is polar to Revit, hence my frustration.

I appreciate the help with posts, keep up the good work.

Mac,

One big difference between Archicad and Revit is that in Archicad there are not View-specific elements. Here it talks about it in Revit:

<LINK_TEXT text="https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/ ... 8-htm.html">https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/revit-products/getting-started/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2021/ENU/Revit-GetStarted/files/GUID-5BFA499A-5ACA-4069-852C-9B60C9DE6708-htm.html</LINK_TEXT>

Instead, 2D elements are usually Viewpoint-specific. So, a Text or Dimension or Label placed in a specific Section Viewpoint will be visible only in that Viewpoint.
However, as Barry stated, Views are simply Viewpoint saved with specific settings, so that they can be restored at any later time.
So in Archicad, you can have many Views of a single Section Viewpoint (or any other Viewpoint).
This is different from Revit, where you have only Views. Or stated in another way, each Viewpoint in Revit (if we are speaking in Archicad terms) can only have a single View, with its specified settings. I hope this makes sense.
