dimensioning question

How do i change my dimension settings so that they round up for down to the nearest 5mm.

Na..... that's not it... I'd already tried that one...
I mean instead of 17997mm the dimension will show 18000mm
or instead of 1504mm the dimesnion will show 1505mm rounding off to the nearest 5mm. That extra accuracy goes the other way see result. Actually no it doesn't even do that... it just sticks in a 5 in supertext.

Hmmm, don't know ....

This won't fix what you've already drawn, but may be a way to get what you want (starting from scratch).

Set "Grid Snap" on.

Set your "snap grid" to 5mm.... draw away ...Dim

Otherwise: Manual override your dimensions

The main problem with any computer: it does not do what you want it to do, but what you tell it to do.

The solution to your problem: you should not have elements at 17997mm, but at exactly 18000. That is what the coordinates are for.

CAD is not manual drafting; you should be precise.

Sometimes lines are on an angle, and therefore not an absolute dimension, how do you do that precise? I Know what you'e talking abount, dbroughton. I've just been doing some steelwork drawings. The fabricators don't want things down to 1mm, they'd be lucky to get within 20!

It's the same with shopfitting drawings in my case.... because they actually fit them together on-site and the dimesions I recieve from clients end up with some weird results..... I know from first hand experiance that if labourers and welders see a 7 or a 3 they think we are idiots and then they look for other things that are wrong in the drawing.

If the dimensions on angle come as a result of the rest of the geometry, you cannot expect them to be rounded off to 5mm. The fabricators anyway have to check everything on the site - it is IMHE unreasonable to expect the site dimensions to match the design perfectly.

Sorry Djordje, I wasn't clear. I know how to use coordinate input, I was referring to geometry results, and sometimes dimensions down to the nearest millimetre are not appropriate and you want to round off. It would be nice to have that option, whether it's 5, 10, 20, 100 or whatever you might need.

all you need to do is alter the dimension manually since if there was an automatic change of dimensions it would change every dimension and not only the ones you want.

I might be wrong, but I thought dimension preferences are stored with view sets now so you could establish a view set for your shop drawings with decreased level of accuracy.

can you dimension the geometry construction method and let the weird dimension float? This way, the fabricators can see there was a specific construction thought behind the drawing and not just some "wacky architect" coming up with numbers...
