You could try to overlay sevral smaller fills (polygons) over you street block and turn on the option to show the polygon area in plan.
You would still have to tweak the size of the polygons manually but the area will update instantly on the screen as you stretch them - no need to update zones.

I don't think you will find anything to divide the area automatically.

<T>Does anyone out there know if it is possible to subdivide the area within a polyline - i.e. a closed drawing element or a fill area in 2d - into a predefined number of equal sized (in area) portions. The action therefore similar to the relative construction method in AC9 on the Control Box of providing pre-set snap points on a 2d line or other element defined either by equal sized sections, a fixed dimension, percentage or half?
I'm therefore trying to perform the same action, but within a defined 2d area.</T>

If I understood correctly what you are asking,
I think its is impossible to achieve it since the combinations of dividing a polygon into equally area portions are infinite.
Could you post an example?

By polyline, (not polygon) I mean a 2d element with several sides, of which these are not necessarily parallel, but that explanation sounds too complicated.. Let me explain what I'm trying to do: I'm trying to subdivide a diagram of a street block into several equal sized portions, the number of which I would like to pre-determine. I'm currently doing it manually and then using the zone tool to auto-number the various sites. However I have to manually adjust each and continually tweak all to go through the exercise to get them equal sized, and then update zones, etc.
If you want to cut the polyline into polylines of equal length, you can find the overall length using the Elements Information Palette and highlighting hte second button. Then you need to do the math.

Yes, that process does seem the best (and only) way.
I was hoping there might be an "automated surface subdivision tool".

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
