Dimensioning the Model

Hi,

Attached is the image of a staircase railing detail. If am confident about modelling and I've done with it.

But How do I dimension the model? What I thought is that If we can save the model as a viewset and put that into the layout book and do the dimension. But ArchiCAD won't allow us to do dimension on Layout.

This kind of posibility is there in AutoCAD, Did I miss something in ArchiCAD?

Can someone suggest for a work around on this?

Hi Srinivas,

What I have done sometimes is save the model view as a .3ds file and import into SketchUp (which is free) and then dimension it.

There is also a utility available on Objects Online called 3rd Dimension #114779 that seems to allow this in ArchiCAD. I have no experience with this though so can't confirm how well it works.

Thanks for the nice tip David, but I am unable to dimension the model perfectly, do I need to rotate the model more precisely to get exact dimensions?

Save the 3D view as 2dl file or simply copy the contents of the flat marquee and paste in a separate view (storey or S/E - NOT the detail view, as you need dimensioning). Place the 2dl in the view, alternatively. It will come across as lines and fills, in correct scale. Dimension to your heart's content ...

When the detail is changed, repeat the process. No live 3D dimensionable view, I am sorry to say.

The Dimensioning Tools can be used in the Detail window. I think this is the best location for this type of detail that is not part of the live model.

You should check your settings in the Parallel Projection Settings dialog box. Make sure the "h" values match, and that you have selected a predefined Axon view (not custom). If your view comes from Orbiting around, these values can be strange.

You are right; even the marker can be placed accordingly. And there are no existing dimensions not to be transferred.

Correct.

Even if you have orbited, open the 3D window settings and set all the axis scale factors to one. Then the dimensioning can commence.
