Adjust Tool - How Does It Prioritise Which Side to Adjust VS Keep?

screenshots below:

first one shows the 2 polylines i want to adjust/shorten towards the orange line. from the right-hand node towards the orange line, specifically.

however in the second screenshot, it adjusts it from the LEFT hand size, where i don't want it to because I have my elevation dims here. I always thought it prioritises to keep the longer side & adjust the shorter one from where the adjustment line is drawn/clicked.

I don't want to do a Marquee adjustment, because i have other lines nearby that i don't want adjusted & having to drawing a marquee around these unaffected lines & to try & intersect the ones i want to change seems to have too many clicks to it. I could simply adjust the node toward the orange line for each of the 2 lines, but i would much prefer if the Adjust Tool actually works.

The annoying this is that half the time it works fine, the other half it doesn't.
i've tried to not click on the grid line (Orange line) but actually draw a line with nodes either starting from the top or bottom to try & see if there's a reference line-type preference but the error persists.

I wonder if it has something to do with them being polylines rather than regular lines.

I experimented but it always cuts the short end for me.

Workarounds which I am sure you are aware of ...

Cut the line (CTRL on Windows machine) just to the right of your grid line.

Then if there is any line left that you don't want, select it and delete.

Or just move the end nodes (one by one).

For a line more than 6 meters long, For the Adjust command, the start point is kept for polylines, unless there are start points on for multiple selected polylines on both sides, then the oldest drawn line starting side is kept.

It appears the lines have been drawn from right to left across the page.

I do not know how to find out which end is a start point for a poly line or which polyline was drawn first, that is why I prefer lines.

For me the polylines are still keeping the long side no matter the direction they are drawn.

....and the more lines you select....

.....and the scale you are at and...

..........and i give up on investigating, quicker to just convert them to lines. using edit -> Reshape -> Linework Consolidation tool....

Yes, the length does affect it - with polylines, not lines.

For the railing tool it seems to be the last end node manipulated, but it keeps the angle which is nice.

seems like the number of elements you adjust also matters.

1. One line, 2 polylines at 27.279m long & a further 2 shorter polylines. I want to adjust these lines to the distances: 20m, 6m & 3m (un-labelled)

2. selecting the line & both longer polylines & adjusting it to the 20m line results in an undesired outcome.

3. using the Adjust tool individually between the line, & the 2 polylines separately yields OK for the line, but both polylines are still incorrect.

4. adjusting the both shorter polylines at the same yields the desired result.

5. Adjusting them together to the 3m line is broken.

6. & adjusting them individually to the 3m line is OK for the straight line, but not OK for the one with the multiple nodes.

trying to remember the results of an action based on the length of the linear element, which you also need to know to achieve a desired Adjust sequence is rather tedious. if you forgo the memory test, then the result can be up to RNG.

i wouldn't mind adding an additional action in the Adjust tool where you decide which side to keep VS which side to adjust. similar to the Cut / Trim command.

of course this only works when you're reducing the length of a linear element with the Adjust tool. the added action wouldn't make much sense if you're increasing the length.

I haven't tested it with the other types (walls, beams, splines etc).
