Thanks for the clarification. Please keep that improvement on the list for the next update. The 3d window/openGL views can be made to look so good on screen but just can't be printed well.

Higher resolution 3d window views on sheets

I'm looking to get higher resolution images on sheeted 3d views when using the generate in 3d Window option.

Here are the view settings of my perspective view:

The pixel count makes no difference when sheeted as a 3d window - it will only change the size of the images when changed to photorendering.

When you sheet the 3d window the size seems to be only affected by how large the window is on your screen when you sheet it. Thus the largest or highest resolution image you can create is dependent on your screen size. Below is the drawing settings after the view is sheeted. You can bump up the resolution but that shrinks the actual image size.

Ultimately I'm looking for similar size images (2'x1.5') I can put full size on a sheet but at a resolution more like 250 or 300. I also use the 3d window option because no 'rendering' times are needed when updating.

Any help?

Matt

Only help is probably to wait for AC29 or newer version based on Roadmap.

Last year, many items from "in progress" segment got into AC28 so I hope it is going to be the same this year.

Karel - thanks for letting me know they are looking at this. It's actually bothered me for years but I've never posted looking for a solution. I hope they change something.

I do know that you can max out your screen resolution on your monitor and then sheet your views - but even then the quality is not great and it's a terrible solution for only a slight bump in quality.

Matt

Hi Matt G,

You can set your 3D window larger than your screen size.

In the 3D window right clic and choose "Define window size".

Correct - but for whatever reason when you then 'save view and place on layout' the image is always cropped in the vertical direction.

That is odd... does it keep the same horizontal resolution? So the aspect ratio changes?

The resolution is increased in the horizontal but the vertical image is simply cropped when placed on a view. Here below you can see the original image sheeted. I then took it and undocked the 3d view and increased the size by 3 in both directions - then sheeted again (top of image). You can see that if I pull the drawing bounds up and down I just get white space. Updating the view does not add the view back - it's cropped still.

If it didn't crop the image this seems like the perfect solution because you can then scale down the size and have a decent resolution on the image - but anything larger than my screen is always cropped. This has happened in all previous version of AC on our end.

On Mac I believe the undocked window can’t be taller than your screen - unlike the width. Seems like a macOS limitation. Once you put in a bigger window size resolution, and check the size again, you’ll notice the vertical height is reset to the screen height.

We have been working on improving this resolution control in the next AC version coming later this year. We had to refactor a lot in this area, to untangle this behaviour.
