IIRC on that test the first issue is that a lot of questions are in Hunglish which are a pain to parse and a lot of users are not native english speakers which might skew the numbers to US, AUS, UK.

Second point is that if the software is harder/difficult to learn and use then obviously users can only learn a fraction of the possible potential. Think how long it took you to learn how to use the new Stair tool.

Third. Nobody cared what Mozart use to play since nobody could do what Mozart was able to do, the same with architecture. I don't get paid for using AC nor any other software. So software has to help me produce. I still enjoy doing CDs by hand but they are not practical so cannot use them as deliverables. Buying the same piano or a better piano than Mozart will not make me equal to him no matter how hard I try. And thinking that the piano builder is the creative one (like GS sometimes promotes itself) is nuts. Same mistake as to promote oneself as "We are the piano that Mozart uses, so we are the better piano…" as if Mozart couldn't pick another.

Creativity has nothing to do with the software, as a 20+ year professor I have to constantly remind students that learning any CAD package will not make them better designers. Thinking about Architecture and problem solving will and for that you don't need any computer.

Is AC a tool for architects or for BIM Managers?

---

AC is a production tool and the main target should be to make it as capable as it could be while making it as easy to learn as possible. If becoming and expert in Revit takes 6 months then AC should target 3 months at a minimum. Workarounds make it more difficult to learn and to remember that particular solution and, in theory, having/saving "Favorites" is counter productive since it doesn't let the user learn how to use that particular tool.

Since R08 I have seen how AC has become more difficult to teach with each new release and I am at the point with my students were the first classes are on how to simplify AC by removing layes, BMats, etc. This year I brought back the old Stair objects since most students cannot and do not have the time to waste learning how to use the current stair tool.

---

Before Revit existed AC was the most productive software compared to Architectural Desktop (easier to use) and regular CAD (faster to create and edit drawings).

This is not the case at this time. AC has shifted to be a tool for specialists.

---

The target should be for AC to become the "SketchUp" of the BIM world. The ideal scenario is for an architect who has "construction" experience should be able to pick AC and produce a schematic set of plans (or recreate one) without external help.

If you need to hire a BIM Manager for a 3 person office then GS lost. If you need a BIM Manager in addition to the Production Manager (Architect) you definitively lost. BIM Managers should be a luxury not a requirement.

If a new user needs 4 weeks of training to start using AC, then GS lost.

If you need workarounds to do something then that is an optimization target.

---

AC can still do this since previous (20+ years ago) decisions have not been removed and they were designed with hardware limitations and by users who valued simplicity. Some examples are: Layer Manager( before the removal of the selection buttons in 26), Organizer, Original Attribute Manager. Examples that need a lot of work are: Stairs, Railings, MEP.

---

The easiest solution I can see is to define Work Environments for:

New users: This should as simple as possible for a new user to produce a CD set

Regular users: Workflow WE were due to limitations you need more experience with AC in order to produce the CD set more efficiently. GO's and Design Options belong here.

BIM Manager mode: Main purpose is not to be used for production but to specifically tailor AC to that particular office. This should be optional. Templates, Attribute Manger and Favorites Creation should be here.

---

Sorry for the rant but GS still keeps pushing me to change piano makers and I prefer not to.

I understand that it should be considered WIP but should that really have to be the case after talking about it for one and a half year? Why does all things implemented by GS seem to be underdeveloped and in need of more work from the get go? Why does development focus continue to feel superficial and marketing driven?

It is certainly a step in the right direction to provide a roadmap but the way it is done does not instil much confidence in the future development of AC.

Finally, some genuine response from GS.

I like the layout, especially coming soon sector. I think you should implement voting system, especially on the idea pool so developers can prioritize demands of the users.

I do feel like Archicad is no more ARCHIcad as in architecture, and architecture seems like is not a priority for development even tho mostly architects use archicad. I understand the need for MEP and structural development, but shouldn't your focus mostly be on making it easier for architects and the main client group by solving SO MANY issue/requests/wishes we see daily on this forum?

To exemplify with some very basic UI things that I really can't see why they aren't implemented:

The roadmap is stated to be for four products but looking at it it's not obvious which item belongs to which product. There should be a tag for each product.

The card-view is really hard to overview and means a lot of scrolling. There should be a more condensed view mode.

Search is limited to one development stage. There should be a centralised search with ability to filter for stage.

A good start but...

Can you separate out BIMx in the headings? Why? Because the BIMx Devs seem to be making excellent progress with many changes and BIMx is in many ways a separate branch of Archicad like MEP.

I would also say the same for BIMcloud, which many of us don't use so those feature are of limited interest when reading the Roadmap

Can't say there's much reassurance under the "In Progress" heading which I assume is geared towards AC28/29. It also feels like architecture is going to be playing second fiddle to DDS/Services for the next couple of years despite the steady demand on this forum for fundamental usability and architectural workflow improvements.

Under Research includes some interesting pointers. Is Keynotes really only at research stage? How does AI-assisted Design take a sense of precedence over many of the elements in the ideas pool?

Dark Mode is still in the Ideas Pool... What! Really. After four years is AC27 still going to continue its delivery of unreadable dialog boxes and generally messy interface on macOS?

Please tell me that after nearly twenty years of asking for Instancing (aka in-place hotlink editing), is it still just an idea? All the development that AC has delivered over the years including the integration of Structural elements and this fundamental function of CAD is still just an idea at Graphisoft?

In the Public Roadmap when using the filtering tags, I see there are more roadmap features for MEP and Structural than there are for Architecture.

If the fee for "Architects" is $975/year for SSA, shouldn't the focus be on developing more tools and features for architects? Why is the focus now outside of our discipline with MEP and Structural?

We need architectural features to drive development. This is ARCHI-CAD. Can someone please explain why the migration to engineering features is dominating the Roadmap?

I notice in the Under Research and Idea Pool, many features that have LONG been in ArchiCAD are being considered to be implemented into BIMcloud as opposed to ArchiCAD. Does this mean you will be removing features like Publishing, Hotlinking, Exporting of DWGs and PDFs to BIMcloud, and unless we subscribe to BIMcloud, we will be out of luck?

I was happy to see FBX in the "coming soon" section. With the announcement of 27 coming in the fall though, I would hope to see it in an earlier hot fix release of 26, as opposed to six more months when 27 is released.

Congratulations team. It is great to see this first step taken.

I am that happy about it, I have already recorded my thoughts about it.

@DGSketcher wrote:

Please tell me that after nearly twenty years of asking for Instancing (aka in-place hotlink editing), is it still just an idea? All the development that AC has delivered over the years including the integration of Structural elements and this fundamental function of CAD is still just an idea at Graphisoft?

GS's reluctance to adress this is beyond belief. Having a proper generalised multiple instantiable group entity should be a baseline for a modern CAD/BIM application - or as they now like to say "industry standard".

Hi all,

I must admit I have mixed feelings about the roadmap.

Don't you guys have some kind of focus group before this kind of announcement?

Since V24, ArchiCAD improvements are mostly based on tools that are not related to architecture. Don't get me wrong, they are needed, but the ratio of development is off. Should be 70/30% in favor of architecture and the rest of 30% other.

It is a good start, but most idea pool MUST be under the coming soon/ In progress tab.

Hope that roadmap is not closed and is open for change.
A voting system is a must so that YOU as a company knows where to put resources, and we as USERS get the tool that we need.

Cheers,

Stefan Veselinović

Thanks Graphisoft for taking a step in the right direction! My first impression is that there are too many Structural and MEP features in the pipeline. I am excited about the prospect of a new GDL editor and RVT geometry exchange. As mentioned by others, it would be great to see a voting system integrated into the road map to assist Graphisoft in prioritising planned features.

Cheers!

I would hate to see the votes and comments divided between two threads for such an important wish, if/when we get to that stage.
