How to do structural drawings (reinforcing bars on floor slabs, footings and columns) in AC?

In 2D or 3D? In both case tis is VERY VERY HARD JOB, believe me (I was doing it for 30 years). Anyway, for 3D use round columns and beams (or complex profile).
How will you make quantity take-offs?. For 2D use lines, polylines, arcs, circles, labels.

The best way is to use special programs:
1. Graitec Advance Concrete (need AutoCAD full license)
2. RoboCAD
3. Revit Structural
4. Radimpex ArmCAD 2005 - only 2D (need AutoCAD full license)
5. Nemetscek Allplan Engineering
etc...

If it's a small building it might be manageable in ArchiCAD. Otherwise I agree that you are better off with a more specialized tool. Tekla really shines for this stuff but is pricey and has a pretty steep learning curve.

Structural drawing in archicad is my target.
I started making the general drawings (the formworks) for RC structures.
It's easy.
Now I'm working to produce some gdl object for the rebars.
I thought a lot about this argument ... and I think that the most difficult part is the drawings of the beams because they depends on several aspects (the way you calculate, the way they build the beams, the way they build the rebars cages, etc). Moreover the cases are so much that you cannot cover all of them with one object only.
Moreover the 2D drawings are of course easier (and more useful in my opionion) that the 3D model of the rebars (except for very complicated nodes of reinforcements).
Actually I'm working on a structural project with archicad of course and for pillars and beams I will be put in my layout the drawings created automatically by the structural software (here in Italy there are very good structural software which produce very detailed drawings for rebars)... all the plates, the retaining wall will be detailed into archicad (with some objects created for the scope) ...

Hi !

It may not be what you are looking for (as it is not full BIM) but cadimage detail tool for ArchiCAD has some integrated structural library parts

<LINK_TEXT text="http://www.cadimageworld.com/products/t ... ilelements">http://www.cadimageworld.com/products/tools/detailelements</LINK_TEXT>#

And the tool in action:
