From Rhino to Archicad. Using Grasshopper to generate IFC

Hello,

Take a look at the link below to see how to convert parametric generated models from Rhino to IFC. Really amazing.

Can I define walls in grasshopper?

Yes, you can nominate whether shape representations are walls, columns, slabs etc. I will add specific components for these types (it takes longer to create the icons than the specific components).

The actual plugin is downloaded from http://www.geometrygym.com, the blog has example files for evaluating and testing.

I'm happy to help advise with specific aspects of IFC generation and options if the software you're linking to does not understand the shape representations such as bezier splines, constructive solid geometry etc. Unfortunately you may need to revert back to faceted brep (which is fine in most situations) but a simplification if the wall has curved faces.

Hello Jon,
thank you for your replay. Let me clear my question. I have form created in a grasshopper (see the picture), it is a cube and spheres intersecting each others. I would like that shape in ArchiCAD, defining it like a wall if possible. And I need that as soon as possible. Is that what your plugin does? If I can do that, than it's a great tool, and a life saver for me. I can send you grasshopper file if needed.

Hi Pejic,

Yes, you can certainly get the shape into Archicad, but it might be a simplified "meshed" version. IFC actually can convey boolean operations and my grasshopper plugin can export it in this format, but it seems archicad does not recognize this aspect of IFC (There's a another thread on this in http://archicad-talk.graphisoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=34325)

I'm more than happy to help, if you follow the installation instructions here http://www.grasshopper3d.com/group/geometrygym/forum/topics/installing-geometry-gym

There wasn't an image I could find with your post, but you can email me directly, jonm@geometrygym.com

Cheers,

Jon

Great, very nice, yes this shape can be exported quickly and easily.

If you can email me the grasshopper definition, I'm happy to help set it up for you. This blog post might be of interest, http://geometrygym.blogspot.com/2010/11/grasshopper-generating-ifc-update.html
