Still haven't a clue what the whole BIMCloud thing was all about, but I suppose it's not that big a new feature if it's not being featured in these videos.
As far as I know BIMCloud is actually quite a big new product.
I got information from Graphisoft that detailed information and feature clips on it will be published in June along with the release of the new version.
Can we assume it will simplify creating a WAN?
i.e., no need for a stand alone BIM server computer, a qualified domain name or static IP address?
NO.

Not to derail this thread.... but I should have looked here: Graphisoft BIMCloud Annnounced

Guys,
Back to rendering questions:
- It looks that a building and landscape hard surfaces will be well addressed and integrated with building materials definition, but, what about entourage that really sets the scene for photorealistic renders?
- I was able to recognize sky setting options but no clue will 'ArchiCAD' objects (library) be up to sniff for renderings presented in promo videos?
- Will there be grass shader that will follow terrain and show 'natural' edge against building or hard surfaces?
- What about billboards will those be part of standard ArchCAD library or there will be separate library to host all of these rendering, not necessary BIM, objects?
- Will file size be manageable or there will be need to create parallel file to be merged for rendering purpose only?
- Batch renderings?
- Hopefully VR to be back and integrated in (I would think that animation will have to be ported to C4D)?
- Bit more technical question-suggestion will there be magic button for OpenGL material Definition: "Match C4D Engine Settings"
-.....? Enough!

Regardless of these questions I am excited to keep and control all of project including rendering within same file, especially with background process that allows for uninterrupted work flow. Congrats to ArchiCAD team.

Regards, Andy
Does this mean Artlantis will slowly die? I don't see any reason to buy it if you get same quality renders straight from the model.

I don't think Artlantis will die for a number of reasons, which would be best talked about in another thread 'CineRender vs Artlantis' perhaps after the 18 release. Each has features that the other lacks, so the choice will be personal / workflow oriented I think. Enough from me until June. 😉

Yes there is a grass shader that can be applied to any surface.
Long, short, thick, this, colour, etc. it is all adjustable.

There is now background rendering so you can carry on with you work and I think you can have more than one going at a time.

Thanks Barry,

Grass shader is very good news and having more than one rendering in background sounds cool but it may become overwhelming on available resource; probably simple script for manual update of camera views, with recorded rendering settings, in Navigator (bunched but rendered one at time) will do better job for work flow.

For the rest of answers and more of question we will wait the release.

Disappointing yes. I am a bit underwhelmed by this one.

I too had really been hoping that Graphisoft would include some kind of Phasing or Design Options Filter. I would have thought all this really requires is an extension of the Renovation Filter (which I think is a great tool) - so as well as current Existing, Demolition, Proposed filters, you could have Proposed Option A, Option B etc.....Currently design options have to be modelled either by having duplicate models (a pain), or overly complex layer combinations (also a pain)
Dan,
Taking a step back about the Renovation filter tool. Design options are fully imbed ding in the current version go the tool with the need for duplicate models and complex layer combinations. The problem is it just not very obvious and transparent how to do it.

The renovation tool has three standard options for element status- existing demolition, and new. The it has multiple filter options that can be set up in any number of ways- hide demo, show but override existing, show new (fully editable and rename-able).

To have multiple design and/or phase options with extra layers, create a Planned Filter option, duplicate it and rename it to Planned Filter Option 2 (or Phase 2), duplicate and rename as many as you want.

Back on the floor plan draw your first design option while the pin is pushed on the revocation filter option. If the pin is not pushed you can go back and pin design elements to the Planned Filter option of your choosing. When you switch to option 2, option 1 pinned elements will turn off. Any unpinned items will remain visible for all other options that are now affected by the different designs.

Pretty nice feature but not well documented.

I have to disagree. IMO, this is another example of one GS's good ideas crippled by its bad habit of not following though and finishing things properly to make them REALLY useful (Take the Selections palette as a classic example).
The "pin" you refer to is the "Show on this renovation filter ONLY" button. Which means that a "pinned" element can ONLY be shown visible in ONE filter ONLY. It's a very inflexible one-to-one relationship. As an example of why this doesn't work, take the "building phases" example: phase 3 needs to include elements that have been "previously built" in phase 2 and phase 1. With the "pin button" used as you described, an element can only exist in one phase.

Likewise with design options -- an element may need to be present in multiple options, whereas at the moment, it can only be visible exclusively in one.

A the very least, it would have been way more useful if GS had changed this button to "Exclude selected element(s) from this filter" rather than "Show only on this filter". In which case the button could have been used to successfully implement phasing and design options (though it still feels like a work-around solution, compared to being able to add your own custom "tags").

As it stands, yet more frickin layers have to be added to the project -- including updating all your layer combinations -- a really 1990s solution, IMHO.

As you can guess, I'm a big fan of the dream of adding custom tags to elements and implementing tag filters to define their visibility on any view. I think this should programmatically be an easy feature for GS to add, and would MASSIVELY simplify the current layer mess we have decended into. The more you think about it, the more you realise its potential, and wonder why on earth this wasn't a priority ten versions ago.

(I guess this will remain an item on the wish list for another year, but feel free to add your vote of support.)

I think ArchiCAD is still BIM software and not a specialised visualisation application.... The only library improvements are GDL coded surfaces organised in a new surfaces library (800 high-quality surfaces for SSA subscribers), completely revamped lights and light definitions with possibility of importing IES light definition files and consolidated tree billboards in visualisation folder.

Not sure what do you mean.
Andy wrote:

the file size increase depends on the quality of surface textures (that will be embedded into AC file) you used.
Andy wrote:

if you are referring to QTVR technology - this QuickTime layer has been discontinued by Apple some time ago... so obviously GS would not support it either. C4D animation is not part of AC (obviously you will be able to create C4D rendered fly-throughs etc as you could with Lightworks)

yes, in fact all out-of-the-box predefined surfaces will be matched to OGL, C4D and Internal
