Create opening from door

I want to create an opening from a door. Is this possible? When I select the door and then click at "Create opening" nothing happens. Is there a limitation on which elements create openings?

Works as usual for me. This is going to be one of those things that makes you laugh when you see what your doing wrong. You have done this a million times and all the sudden you can do it right Its probably already set to Use an Empty Opening which is why you can't select that option. Just click the wall.

I think the 'Connect > Create opening from selection' (right mouse click) is more for beams passing through walls and will create an opening object (the new opening tool).

If you want to to change the door into an empty opening you can use the button bottom left in the door properties dialogue (or as Steve has shown).
But it will still be a door and not an opening object.

That also works as expected for me.

Interesting.
This does nothing for me - the doors just stay as they are.

But I don't have the latest build (4018) installed.
I'm still using 4007 - will try and update later and will try again.

The function works with a morph (for example) or the Opening Tool Object to cut a hole in all elements that intersect it.

or are you talking about something else?

I will say no, so someone can hopefully prove me wrong. You would need to use the Opening Tool or some element that intersects what you want to cut like a morph. You can't do it with a beam, wall, column, door, window... unless they intersect, and if that is the case you would still need to use the SEO instead of Connect feature. ?? I am not 100% sure about that but it does make sense to me that something has to be making an intersect with what your cutting. I think the bottom line is that you do not need to cut openings from a door because the Opening Tool works so well for doing that.

OK, here's what I'm trying to do: I have a wall with openings and I want to place an external cladding. This cladding is a second wall placed outside with a small gap. I want to have the openings cut through the exterior cladding and adjust the cutting to the cladding depending on the size and position of the doors and windows that may vary. I can do this with the opening tool, but I have to manually resize and reposition the opening every time I make a change to a door or window. I would like to have this done automatically with associated opening to the specific door/window.

No you can't do that.
You can manually add an opening to match the window, but it will be independent of that window.

I am not sure if this will work in your situation, but you can merge the walls into one complex profile wall.
EDIT menu > RESHAPE > MERGE WALLS.

If you do this, be sure to save the 'Custom' complex profile with a name.

One for the WISHLIST. I get frustrated carving up walls for different finishes, it would be great to associate a separate wall finish with a core structure without being tied to the core wall length & height. I would hope that any openings could adapt to the applied finishes.
