how to cut roofs

Not applicable
I am having trouble cutting away portions of a roof that I've created using the roof tool.

The Help directions are as follows:
You may need to make holes in Roofs. Select a Roof pane and start drawing a new contour within its boundaries. The new contour will be interpreted as a hole in the Roof.

I've tried this but the roof deselects as soon as I start drawing the roof within the roof.

How can I remove portions of a roof?

Thank you,
John

Do you have the roof tool selected when you try to edit the roof?
Are you trying to cut holes in the roof or edit the edges?

Anytime you are trying to edit a building element (roof, slab, etc.) you need to have the element Tool active in the Tool Palette and the element that you want to edit selected.

The Long way:
1. Select the roof.
2. Alt+Click the roof to activate the Roof Tool
3. Click and Hold along the Roof edge or corner to activatre the edit Pet Palette.
4. Select the "-" button.
5. Draw/trace/magic-wand your roof opening.

You can skip the Pet Palette steps once you understand how element editing works.

In v8, I don't think you've to select roof tool to edit Roof!
Just have the Roof selected, click on any of the corners or edges, a pet palette come out.............select desired operation.

... and to make a hole you can use subtraction (not Booleans, standard ArchiCAD polygon editing).

Of course, there are also Booleans in 8.0/8.1
