How do I turn shadows and surface colors on/off in exterior elevations?

interesting since it does not work on mine. is there another item to turn on
its not working in either my 17 or 19 versions I know I've used the color in elevations before it also does not work in 3d documents
I'm on a mac 10.10.5

finally got color elevations to work
I had to go to documents then to model view then to override fill display and uncheck override cover fills
