OT: Some excellent renderings / animations

I went to a lecture / presentation yesterday by Lon Grohs, principal and creative director of Neoscape. They do rendering work for clients like Libeskind, Safdie, Hadid, HOK, SOM... He, himself, is an architect by training, but the 40-person company has people from various creative fields.

The work was really impressive, so I thought I'd share the link to their web site in case anyone else might find it inspirational:

Like Dwight has tutored us here, Lon is all about telling a story with the imagery - and the film clips. For the films, they do full production and control in-house, not just the architectural part. So, they green-screen actors, etc and edit the final RFP or advertisement piece.

It was interesting to hear that Neoscape has 'outlawed' the 'fly-through', 'walk-through' and 'virtual tour'. This coincides with things that Dwight has advised Dwight has advised in his books as well. Some of the videos certainly contain brief 'walk through' segments of individual rooms though.

The lighting most frequently seems to convey a mood, rather than absolute realism. The tonal composition in many pieces is highly artistic.

One of the best bodies of illustration work I've seen. (Some nit-picks in various images aside.) Check it out.

Cheers,
Karl

PS Interestingly (to me), Lon said that the firm is generally hired by the developer, not the architect. But, the architects fully cooperate with the model. For example, Zaha Hadid's firm provides 3D models to them.

PPS If you're in Boston ... Lon mentioned that he teaches classes at BAC.
